politics @lemmy.world•Trump’s EPA to roll back rule limiting hazardous mercury from coal plants
2·10 days agoThis kills my only hope …… a couple weeks ago I was trying to be positive on environmental news and made a big deal to my kids that during their lifetime they’ll be able to eat unlimited tuna.
The general recommendation for tuna has always been to limit it to once a week, to moderate mercury poisoning. The mercury is generally from coal emissions. However globally we appear to be at peak coal and likely to drop quickly, given china’s rapid buildout of renewables both there and in developing countries, and given US coal use has been declining for years. In only a couple decades we’ll have greatly reduced mercury contaminating the ocean food chain, a few more years for it to drop out of the food chain, then MTGA, Make Tuna Great Again!
It seems inevitable but this one deranged individual can noticeably slow the process. Can I still hope my kids will see it?

5·11 days agoYep, this is how we keep shifting right. I don’t care how much it smells, when it comes down to the actual election, hold your nose and vote to shift left.

politics @lemmy.world•Newsom’s message to the Democratic Party: Be more ‘culturally normal’
3·11 days agoYeah but you can’t start shifting things left again unless you get elected. We like to think it’s just reality that shifted right, not the voters, but maybe they are.
Each side has mostly dedicated voters who will always vote for them, and a relatively small population who can go either way. They’re the ones who decide the election: who are they?

2·11 days agoCan you point to any sources about Buttigieg? I have to admit to not paying attention to him until very recently, when he’s been a voice of reason. I don’t know his history

politics @lemmy.world•‘We’re no longer attracting top talent’: the brain drain killing American science | US news
1·15 days agoFor sure the ridiculous us money for little benefit to us citizens at high us consumer cost is ridiculous. But that doesn’t change the fact that there’s been a lot of medical r&d benefitting all our lives. We want that to continue and the us should prefer that it be here
But the thing is it’s across all science and technology. US has benefitted from brain drain from other parts of the world, some of the best scientists coming here for the best rewards. That’s a good thing (for the US).
Reversing that brain drain is a bad thing (for the US) and this is a scenario where a very few individals can make a huge difference. If we don’t have a critical mass of researchers to become a desirable destination and we don’t have research opportunities, and yes if we don’t have opportunities for rewards, the brain drain flows the other way. That’s great for the countries retaining more of their top researchers, but bad for the US, bad for the researchers if there are less rewards and bad for everyone if it results in less opportunity. and this is a people thing so an individual staying away affects other individuals and new researchers see which way the brains are draining and a poor reputation for supporting science and research may not be overcome in these peoples lives

politics @lemmy.world•US fixation on the hard-hat economy and making manufacturing great again makes little sense
3·20 days agoThis is really not inevitable, and policy is a huge part of it. I do believe Biden is a poor example here, because that approach to rebuilding manufacturing was to actually invest in it. Especially investing in forward looking technologies. Especially trying to establish longer term consistent policies, especially trying to connect with reality and science
Trying to force a return to “the good old days”, starting trade wars with every one, terrorizing large segments of workers, flip flopping policies for personal gain, isolationism, trying to protect old technologies/manufacturers from competition will never work. This is hugely more self-destructive than hands off
Anyone try Rancher? Is that still a thing? When I looked into k8s a few years back, Ranchers was highly recommended to simplify managing k8s if you couldn’t automate. Supposedly friendly and free.

politics @lemmy.world•The Actual Gavin Newsom Is Much Worse Than You Think
11·21 days agoThese do annoy me. Of course Newsom is not the best candidate but they are distracting everyone from how much better that would be than the current shitshow
And I have to ask y’all, are we really going to an insists on an ideal candidate regardless whether they are electable?
I have no idea whether Newsom is but he has name recognition, presidential presence, and a successful “populist” strategy. He has successfully positioned himself as a leading foil of Trump. All that stuff that seem necessary for getting elected even if they have no part in whether they would do well for their constituents. …. And they’re building a train!
I do always wonder if this is just republicans trying to astroturf “both sides the same”.

politics @lemmy.world•The Actual Gavin Newsom Is Much Worse Than You Think
2·21 days agoThere’s an argument that most of the stuff done in trumps name would be “ok” if he did it legally and that’s what people wanted. It’s the abuse of authority, the personal enrichment, violating the constitution, holding people above the law, enforcing personal feelings, violating checks and balances that are the critical issues.
I wouldn’t want to live in such a society but it would at least be “legitimate”

politics @lemmy.world•The Actual Gavin Newsom Is Much Worse Than You Think
1·21 days agoA few years back the Boston globe did an expose on panhandlers and yeah, there are scammers and you need to recognize them but most people in need are truly people in need.
My take on it was that aggressive panhandlers in prime locations (major tourist spots, intersections with chronic backups) are most likely scammers. People sitting quietly looking defeated are in need. The hard part is deciding whether/how to help all those in between, but it’s good to remember that most people who look homeless are homeless
Then there’s that weird guy who approached to talk about his knife, probably to try to steal my dog while technically not threatening - I so regret not calling police

Good question, I may have to “investigate” too. I missed it live but maybe I’ll track down some videos

As far as we know, none of the children raped or molested by Trump have committed suicide
