  • The problem with not attempting another impeachment is that it even further lowers the bar for what counts as impeachable behavior. The lesson going forward for conservatives will be that corruption, personal enrichment, stealing and hoarding classified information, inviting other nations to meddle in our elections, using EOs like they allow you to dictate new laws, and mob-style ‘negotiating’ with our allies, are all perfectly OK from now on.

  • I suppose a state can sign it’s rights away in a contract just like any other entity, but I’d love to know if one EVER HAS. Because I don’t think that’s up to GEO and ICE to determine between the two of them which laws they are obligated to follow or not. At first I assumed that ICE had gotten some actual US State to agree to this, which would be horrible but at least would make more sense than a private fucking company and a federal agency unilaterally declaring they won’t follow the laws of the state they are operating in, which is what this appear to be.

  • In my state we vote 100% by paper mail-in ballot and it is one of the most secure, traceable, and fraud-resistant ways you could possibly do it. And it’s vastly more fair than in person voting for the disabled, elderly, homebound, just to name a few. Repubs will whine about machines not having a proper paper trail and then shit on literally the most auditable, paper-trail-ful possible way of doing things, which is universal mail-in ballots. I’ve never heard one person here, of any political side, say that they’d rather have a touchscreen backed up by god knows what quality of software in a booth someplace they have to drive to on one certain day so they can stand in line for hours and cross their fingers that their vote registers the way they meant it to.

  • If Platner wants to defend himself publicly on this, and/or keep running, and/or sue the accuser for libel, he’s free to do any or all of that. As anyone who’s been around for a few cycles know, its pretty common for candidates and other public figures, when they first reach a certain terminal level of attention or fame, to get a wide range of accusations on business, personal matters, drug use, and past sexual behavior. Just because these appear to be conveniently timed politically, is not evidence for or against their veracity. If there is no actual juice to these accusations, then dealing with people who lob bombs like that into the middle of campaigns is a well-worn playbook that thousands of politicians have run and won with, and he’ll be fine. If.
