  • I’d say “old” RAID could be dead if you have proper backups and have the ability to replace a defect drive fast in the case uptime is crucial.

RAID and backups serve different purposes. Backups are to prevent data loss, RAID is to prevent downtime in case of hardware failure. They are not interchangeable.

  • Which is weird because I’m not in a city and live in a small town of less than 20k people

Not weird at all. It’s much easier to run fiber in a small town than in a large city. Cities are denser and more crowded. It’s also more crowded underground. In a city you might have to close streets, you need to be more careful when digging because of all the other stuff underground.

All that makes it cheaper and easier to install fiber in small towns or smaller, less dense cities.

  • The learning curve is a bit steep, but for me it’s part of the fun. You control all the variables, which kind of forces you to learn about the whole espresso making process. Once you got the workflow down it’s not too bad.

Don’t get it if you expect a quick cup of espresso in the morning. Do get it if you like to fiddle with things and want go the extra mile to get the most out of your espresso.

  • The longer story is it’s actually best to stop charging your phone at 80 percent unless you really need the extra juice, because any time your phone spends above that is potentially damaging, but that tends to be hard to deal with for most people.

iPhones handle this automatically if you enable ‘optimized charging’. They charge to 80% and keep it there until just before you need to take the phone off the charger (they base this on your alarm and some on-device machine learning stuff to predict when you will pull it off the charger in the morning). It then charges to 100% just in time, so the battery spends as little time as possible above 80%.

  • As others said, fun and convenience.

For example: when I start a movie, the lights in my living room dim or turn off automatically. Sure, I could get up and do and set several lights manually, but I would probably not bother and watch a movie in a lit room. When I stop or pause the movie, lights go back to the normal setting.

If it’s dark when I get home and I open the front door, it starts the default lighting program. Sure I could fumble for the light switches in the dark, but it’s another convenience.
