55·2 days agoI’d bet donuts to dollars they printed out a copy of the 1951 accord and let him sign it like it was a new agreement. Told him he was a genius for negotiating a “deal.”

politics @lemmy.world•Minnesota statewide strike, economic blackout to protest ICE on Friday
5·2 days agoThank you! I organized my first protest back at the turn of the century, when Dubya was manufacturing consent for the US invasion of Iraq, and over the years I have learned that more people respond to “come join us — it’s easy” than to scolding. Most Americans already know we should be in the streets; what remains is to convince them is that they can.

6·2 days agoThe cold is not a blocker! It’s super easy to stay home from work, school and shopping when it’s super cold out. Most of the actual meetings are via zoom
Edit: here’s one if anyone’s interested:

7·2 days agoI think you could strike for ten days too. I think they’d be okay with that.
I bet they’d be pumped if you struck indefinitely.

21·2 days agoI agree that announcing an end date for a general strike removes a lot of the threat that a general strike implies, and limits its effectiveness. I’m really holding out for just getting a bunch of people who wouldn’t normally take the day off work to go protest out into the streets to meet the real organizers. I think there are a lot of people who want to do something to help Minnesota from outside the state but don’t know what, and “go grocery shopping on Thursday after work and call in sick to work on Friday” is a very concrete and achievable goal.

I’ve been voting the alternative for more than 20 years, so I’m pretty sure that’s not the thing that needs to be done here, since it keeps not working.

55·4 days agoGeneral: today, we’re doing planning for invading Greenland. I know everyone hates it and it’s a waste of time, but the Commander-in-Chief has ordered it. Admiral, can you get us started?
Admiral: invading Greenland would be an illegal order, and we are required to ignore illegal orders. We would deploy 400,000 gallons of hot chocolate and instruct our soldiers to get out their comfy slippers and watch Heated Rivalry.
General: And that successfully concludes our planning exercise for invading Greenland. I’ll see you all on the golf course.
For me, the scariest part is that they have used the defense that a human has a body and that body is inherently a weapon. By saying that ownership of a body is reasonable grounds for an ICE officer to fear for their lives, it clears the way for them to legally claim that any shooting of any human at any time is justified because that person had a body and so they had reason to fear for their lives.

13·10 days agoYes, and we’re focusing on the positive!
Surprisingly, analysts foresee a possible rise of more than 2 percent in the budget category known as basic research — the blue-sky variety that produces fundamental strides and spinoffs in fields such as health care and artificial intelligence.

163·11 days agoThat green line is labeled “independent,” but I can tell you for a fact there’s no 45% of Americans voting independent. I’m guessing a more accurate label for that line would be “doesn’t vote.”

The thing that is most irritating about this “Trump is play 8d chess while everyone else is playing checkers” argument (irritating specifically; there are more horrifying or awful things) is that because the argument is specifically that Trump is engaging in complex negotiation, any concession of any kind will be portrayed as a success. If the EU does anything — signs a trade deal, updates NATO governance, increases military budgets domestically — Trump will call it a deal and all these morons will say “see, look, I told you, he was just negotiating.” And there is no way to claim that the cost of the negotiation tactics is not worth the benefit of the so-called deal because they are explicitly isolationist and burning bridges with other countries is a feature, not a bug.
