Except China is a full blown dictatorship fully committed to genocide and land grab their way to the top while the USA can still steer away from it even after everything that‘s already happening.
Bolton is an interesting character in that I believe he has the USA‘s best interest in mind but says and probably did a lot of evil things in the eyes of the rest of the world.
With that in mind I think that, yes, he is absolutely right but it doesn‘t and shouldn‘t be that way. The world needs to be less dependent on China or the USA and maybe here is the chance to do so.

It has been pointed out for as long as Trump is running against any candidate but it didn’t change a thing. If anything, the double standard only got worse over the years.
You will find that civil wars in a digitalized surveillance state are very short lived and that the masses don‘t actually hold all that much power apart from the few things they‘re legally allowed to do. So unless tens of millions just stop showing up to work across the country, I don‘t see how the citizens have any leverage whatsoever once the election is over.
It‘s not so surprising that the NYT does not know what a proper democracy looks like. They‘re American after all and never experienced one.
