Oh I didn’t thing about access points. With something like ZigBee, the switches add to the network range. But for WiFi, each switch will need to be in range of an access point. We have pretty decent coverage but the benefit of using ZigBee is other devices can take advantage of the extended network.

Others have talked about Zwave, I’m not sure which camp they sit in.

I was under the impression that WiFi could only handle so many devices connected. 20 years ago if you got more than 10 or 20 some would start getting kicked off. Maybe that was my short router. Is that never an issue with modern routers? Even adding hundreds?

How do WiFi switches do when you have a lot? Is it an issue to put in 50 WiFi switches, wouldn’t that overload the network?

An analysis I read said NY almost never imprisons a first time fraud offender. If true then it’s pretty unlikely he will be imprisoned at all.

I have a 2016 Nissan Leaf. It’s a short range commuter car, it makes a great second car for a family but it’s no good if it’s your only car.

I live in a left-hand drive country that gets heaps of used imports from Japan (who is also left-hand drive), so they are cheapish and easy to get YMMV,. The entertainment system is not touch screen, it has physical buttons including controls on the steering wheel. I’m not sure if it can phone home since it’s no longer in a supported country. We use Bluetooth for music and that’s it as the Nissan Connect stuff doesn’t work here.

I use it, and like it. They dropped prices a while back so now you can get unlimited searches for $10 a month (they also have a $5 limited tier and a free trial).

First thing is I’d like to live in a world where search engines (and the internet in general) don’t have to be ad supported. This is a different model so I want to support it.

But also Kagi has some nice features. My favourite is how I can block Pinterest, and boost the ranking of other sites like Wikipedia. Basically you can have some control over search results.

If you’re familiar with SearxNG, that’s basically how Kagi works. They run the searches on a bunch of search engines and then present one cohesive search results page. But SearxNG for me takes several seconds to get the results, and Kagi is almost instant.

I don’t know if it’s significantly better than the free options, but I like using it and it’s pretty cheap really.

I think it’s like this: if your game is not on Steam, you won’t sell many copies. Publishers fight to make sure the game is on Steam.

If your movie isn’t on Steam, the company doesn’t care. No one goes to Steam for movies. So Valve has to fight to get the rights to distribute (and compete with streaming services).

In the lemmy web UI I believe it is. But it’s not the only way to access lemmy, there are other website frontends and a bunch of apps which all can have different ways of doing things.

Another option is to spin up the Lemmy frontend on another subdomain. Lots of Lemmy instances run several front ends.

Hmm, I think back to say the early 2000s, before digg and reddit but after static websites. I never got the opportunity to use Usenet but random forums all running on PHPBB and later, Invision Power Board, with some other software thrown in.

Ok, that might be rose tinted glasses, as that was the first experience of user-led content rather than static sites (unless you count geocities).

Digg, and later Reddit, was a sort of bringing together of these different forums into one platform. It was great at the time, but so was 1GB of free email when other free email providers were doing 5MB and we all know how that turned out…

Man, I’m feeling half nostalgic and half old talking about seeing the birth of Gmail and the first mainstream social media and the first iPhone. My kids hear my stories about the days before smart phones and the days before aeroplanes and think of them as the same kinda time frame.
