There’s definitely middle ground to be found, and decency to exercise.

Lefty here. I have a queer wife who identifies as non-binary but still identifies as my wife, as well as plenty of trans and queer people in my social circles, and I don’t see the need to word police myself over completely innocent phrases. I don’t think you’re harming anyone by just saying women, when the men or nonbinary people who can get pregnant constitute like a tenth of a percentage of the population.

I go out of my way to make sure the not-straight people in my life feel safe and comfortable around me, but there’s a certain level of pearl clutching over language that I don’t feel the need to engage with. You aren’t being hateful, you’re treating people like human beings, and you get to decide for yourself how you speak.

I think it’s pretty normal for people to want their high end thing to look high end, or whatever high end looks like to them. My PC case is basically a black rectangle with a single pane of glass on one side. It has some rainbow vomit lighting inside that isn’t all customizable with Linux, but my razer mouse mat, mouse, and keyboard all glow a lovely purple, just one static color. My desk, peripherals and case all match in black, so really any color I choose to run with makes for an easy vibe change.

I think maybe a half a dozen people have even seen my pc setup, and I don’t really take visitors back there, so whatever cool looks my setup has are just for me, and I enjoy it.

That said, there is a such thing as it being too busy, too gaudy, etc, so I totally get what you’re saying. My shit is lit up but I still feel like it’s fairly subdued.

So, I used to play valorant and pubg when I was still a windows user. It was around the time of my switch to Linux that I learned about intrusive kernel level anti cheat.

Honestly, I don’t miss them, and refuse to play a game that compromises the safety and security of my operating system, just as much as I refuse to use an operating system that even allows kernel level access to something as trivial as a game.

My latest run in with this issue was the Marathon pre-alpha. I was granted access only to find that Bungie was Linux hostile, and after making a few speeches about it in the discord I uninstalled it and left.

I’m fine with this scenario. If I want competitive multiplayer I have CS2, Apex legends, and others. If games refuse to support Linux, fuck em.

Just another lens to view this through. There’s a certain rebellious spirit that can come along with embracing FOSS, and that should be part of the appeal.

A long time ago, republicans needed an easy way to get voters to vote against their own interests and instead vote in the interest of the corporate overclass. Abortion. It’s genius. Make the preachers ultra wealthy by getting them to preach about something the Bible never seemed concerned about. Abortion. They’re murdering babies, you just have to get out and vote.

Eventually that strategy brought diminishing returns. They overturned Roe and the issue doesn’t have the same bite that it once had. They needed a new plan. Wait, I’ve got it. Trans people existing. Trans people bad, and they’re trying to assimilate your children by existing. They’re trans animals now, pooping in litter boxes at school. How long until you have to refer to your children by neopronouns under the threat of incarceration?

Seriously. This is how trump won the election. This issue is the issue they chose and it works. I hear it from my rightoid coworkers all the time. The GOP creates boogeymen to get idiots to the polls and it works, and the democrats have nothing to counter it.

It has a banner stating that the website is under construction to comply with orange man orders, but everything that matters is unchanged, most importantly the “build a kit” guidelines.

I highly recommend people look at the kit guidelines and consider it a bare minimum for basic preparedness, even in times where our leadership isn’t completely off the rails.

The current US administration and its demagogues and lackeys have been doing all sorts of things they shouldn’t be able to do in a normal society. You’d be amazed at how quickly they’d be able to shut down a form of mass media they can’t control.

It’s fine if you don’t like my mentality. I’m highly selective about who I let into to my day to day life in meatspace. I like small gatherings, and keep a high bar for who I want to associate with. I don’t see why I shouldn’t apply the same principle to my internet life.

Do you want them here? I don’t. I don’t tell a soul about lemmy, because this is place for me to get away from them. A place for mostly rational discussion, populated by people free thinking enough to seek an alternative. If the masses descended on Lemmy, they’d ruin it like they ruin everything else. They’d draw the attention that would lead to it being litigated, regulated, purchased, corporatized etc. Let them stay on Facebook and Reddit.

Edit: ITT: A bunch of people who haven’t paid attention to how mind bendingly stupid content has become on mainstream social media, or worse yet, actually enjoy the chum pumped out by Facebook and TikTok and want it to come to lemmy as well. I’ll wear my downvotes with pride.

This is the real answer. In this day and age where a 16gb USB stick can be had for literally $5usd on Amazon, it would be silly not to have a few kicking around. I don’t think any Linux distro live environment media requires more than 16gb, and it’s more than enough for updating a bios. I even used one to update the infotainment system in my vehicle last week. Kind of a necessary tool.

People live in their fantasies, where national primary elections are just a cut and paste affair that takes two days to set up.

This happened a year ago, and as a union tradesman, while I’d take Biden, or a rock with a face painted on it over trump, I’d rather not have an ancient dumbfounded old man representing my interests.

He’s better than trump for our unions, but come on dude he’s barely fucking alive at this point.

Correction, Biden legit said “goodest job”, and if my soul was still functional I would have fell out of my chair when I heard it.

Hell yeah, I’ll give it a look. I’ve almost made it a hobby to research the shit out of the most durable and long lasting items I can buy, and things that are capable of being maintained or repaired since I’m kind of a tinkerer. I also buy American or union made whenever it’s an option.

Boy oh boy have I been waiting for the opportunity to plug my favorite can opener. It’s a “turning one” as you call it, from a company called OhSay. American made, and built like a brick shit house, I have no doubts it’ll outlast me. Google it, I think they’re like $15-20

Super accurate and relatable. Playing misery mod and building up a decent kit and venturing further into the zone than I’d ever been is one of the most memorable gaming moments of my life.
