My explanation would be that the GOP was moving towards fascism for decades (dogwhistles etc.). Worsening of material conditions (effective QOL), propaganda or “talking points” on news and social media that became more and more detached from reality, fearmongering (wars, terrorism, islam, socialists, corruption, climate change) paved the way for him. He’s just the symptom. Without the greed of the mainstream media to give his BS free airtime he couldn’t have done it. But the time was right for someone like him because the old bullshit didn’t cut it anymore. You see very similar all around the world (south america, india, europe, russia)

Normally the political system also heavily filters who gets to rise to power. He managed as an outsider because he was known.

The rise of the techno barbarians.

We living in a democracy in name only. Without a free press and independent media and without better rules to allow the people to make better choices, it’s always going to go the way of some weird self reinforcing and randomly mutating ideology.

American Taliban, or a fascist theocracy. They believe that inequality based on some mythological identity is not just acceptable but morally correct.

And they can hire the most intelligent sociopaths money can buy

What is interesting though is that they provide a bit more background to Imran Kahn as a Trump-like populous that got co-opted by the Pakistan military and his own election in 2018 was also quite questionable (previous PM was jailed). Until they had a big falling out ending in riots and mass arrests.

Overall this story reminds me a bit of Patriot… so much shady dealings and then falling flat on their faces, including now failing to properly rig the election lol. I’m not even sure if I should root for Imran Khan here. Hasan Ali describes him as willing to do pretty much anything in the pursuit of power.

But it’s scary how precarious all this is and the role of the IMF and US. They get the bailout but have to cut energy subsidies which leads to protests and political instability… I feel like more and more the wheels are coming off in all these meddling affairs around the world.

The only reason why republicans are against this I can imagine are:

1. Make Biden look weak (“Oh shucks I can’t make them do anything!”) and Trump strong by comparison
2. Because they follow their leader Trump who is somehow in bed with Putin

I just saw a video about Pakistan and it didn’t seem to be clear the CIA is responsible for this: Why Pakistan Locked Up It’s Leader | Hasan Ali | TMR. But I’d be interested in any info to the contrary!

Minority rule

Another criterion might be to be self employed. I have little experience with that and it probably has it’s pro’s and con’s but depending on what corporate culture you’ll face as an employee. But it might be worth keep it in mind when choosing your profession.

The last bit isn’t really relevant for your app, just a general rant really. It’s just that I’d like better image viewing support all around. Like in browsers there is an image and you can click on it but then a new tab opens. I have imagus but it’s not ideal and restricts the image to the smaller browser window. In the explorer I have quicklook now that opens images with space but the zoom feature is half assed too. Then many images apps have long startup times (>0.2 secs) or are bloaty. It’s just a bit annoying that it’s 2024 and PCs still can’t handle images really well.

Does this only show these foss_photo_libraries and your local photos?

Does it support jpegXL?

I’d love a seamless zoom feature for images in the browser. I use imagus but I’d love if the popup window could zoom to be bigger than the browser window.
