Where you’re at now sounds particularly bad, but having worked fully remotely for a few years myself, it definitely isn’t guaranteed to be better for your work-life balance. It’s difficult to separate the two spheres for one thing, and you can still end up in a situation where you may get requests, messages and pings come through at any time, constantly.

I’ve worked for roughly half a dozen employers so far. In my experience an employer may SAY they value employee work-life balance, that’s no guarantee they actually will. They may also genuinely believe they prioritise it, but still fall hugely short of what other employers can offer.

Yep, my experience exactly. It’s mostly because I can define my own hours when working for myself. But also - When I’m working for someone else there’s also a nagging feeling that I’m pissing away my life force if I go as much as a single hour over.

Working “full time”. I love what I actually do at work (generally) but like… doing it 9-6 five days a week is so fucking draining. It feels like working defined hours for the sake of working in those hours. Obviously for most jobs the hours spent working do matter, but for software development it may actually be counterproductive as being tired fucks up your productivity hard

My most recent dream was super abstract… which isn’t uncommon, but this one was really out there.

I was trying to draw some weird oval glyph things with an e pencil or something. The stroke of the pencil was super thin and the colour was like medium blue on black background.

At some point I realised that these glyph things represented a set of HTTP requests and I was trying to set up a Postman collection with them…

Hardware encoding is really great to have on a server. A lot of the time you wouldn’t even think about its existence in a desktop use case but if you monitor resource metrics on a server you can see how huge of a help it is.

I use an old 7700k for my media server. Took a little stint of configuration to pass the integrated graphics device from the Proxmox hypervisor, into the k8s worker node VM, and then into the Jellyfin pod, but very much worth it. Jellyfin x264 1080p transcoding now takes roughly a third of the CPU resources compared to doing it all in software.

Over the year or so I had my stuff configured this way, on at least one occasion (that I know about… I was still setting up my observability stack during this year), the servers were flapping hard for over a day, causing my records to magically vanish from existence intermittently.

I tried contacting them every way I could, hell I even descended into the quagmire of Twitter and created an account so I could tweet at them… and got silence.

Pretty disappointing. I ended up moving all my DNS to AWS Route 53 after a few hours of pulling out my hair. They did eventually respond to my email like a day later, after I’d already moved everything over.

But idk maybe I’m wrong expecting an indie domain registrar to have super high availability on their nameservers… oh well
