  • I’m having a hard time figuring out, if these exist elsewhere, but over here, I can buy dried soy shreds, which are really great for pasta.

Here's a product I can buy over here, to give you an idea.

So, those are roughly meatball-shaped. There’s also smaller one’s which kind of work in sauces like minced meat.
They don’t taste like meat, more like wheat, but they give you the same protein and chewiness and can be kept in a cupboard basically until the end of time.

  • That one can be realized client-side (just don’t actually pause the stream download, but rather write it into a buffer). No idea, if there actually is a client that implements this, but it is conceptually possible.

I rather meant that with a livestream, people don’t want to be several minutes behind. They want at most a few seconds delay, so they can collectively chat about the things happening in the stream and reasonably hold conversations with the streamer.

What you can do as well, is to just pause the stream when the ad starts and then reload when you imagine the ad might be over…

A big difference is that Twitch livestreams are creating content as reality happens. You can’t skip ahead, you can’t pre-load into a buffer. YouTube would need to take those features away to allow for similarly effective ad enforcement, which would eliminate a significant advantage of VODs.

  • I’ve basically only watched one video on this (of someone who’s supposedly medically trained, has fibro themselves and published a book about fibro), so you know, don’t think I’m an expert.

But well, according to this video, one common cause for pain in people with fibro is muscle tension. She said something like, what’s normally considered dangerous levels of muscle tension, where you’d actively medicate people in a hospital, that’s normal levels for fibros.

Obviously, you won’t get muscle tension in an exam, except maybe in your writing hand, because you’re not really using your muscles and exams tend to be short enough anyways.

Another suspected cause is that during fight-or-flight, your body releases testosterone, which inhibits, I believe, oxytocin production, which means your body slows down long-term regenerative processes. So, quickly closing up a bleeding wound is on schedule, but making sure your joints are regenerated before the next fight-or-flight situation, that’s lower priority while you’re supposedly still in a fight-or-flight situation.

  • Here on LineageOS, WebView only shows up in the app list, if I tell it to “Show System”…

On some Android distributions, there is a user-visible WebView-app, which contains an updater, but I imagine, that’s actually a separate package which just updates the system’s WebView package.

And I imagine, that updater-app is optional. At the very least, WebView is clearly installed on my OS and my launcher doesn’t show a WebView app…

  • You mean that it’s undefined?

You can think of a cake. You can divide a cake into 4 pieces or 2 pieces or basically not divide it, by ‘dividing’ it into 1 piece.

But it’s not possible to divide a cake into 0 pieces. It doesn’t make logical sense. You have to eat it (subtract from it) to actually make 0 pieces. With division, the sum of all pieces has to be 1 cake. If there’s one cake, there’s at least one piece.

What’s confusing is that we have separately decided that ‘dividing’ a cake into 0.5 pieces means you multiply it by 2. So, either 2 cakes or a cake that’s twice as large. That is why some mathematicians do treat 1/0 as ∞.

  • Kind of feels disparate from it being a video game, but it’s difficult to really make this experience another way:

I wanted to play a healer in an MMO. It was a shitty MMO, so healers could only be female characters wearing skimpy armor.

Well, it took about half a minute until I had people walk up to me, to then just stop 3 meters away. From the way they were moving, I have to assume, they were working their cameras to look underneath my skirt, and probably doing so with only one hand.

Some of them were sending me “hello :)” messages, which I guess is basic decency, if you’re going to use my body, but it felt weird, too, since we had nothing to talk about.

All in all, it felt uncomfortable. And I did not even have to fear for them to start touching or even raping me. Plus, I was able to log out, delete my account and basically just leave all of that behind.

Well, except for one thing I did not leave behind: I do not want to be the other side in that experience either.

  • Well, this is kind of a different discussion, but I also find the modern consciousness concept self-contradictory, but the way that resolves for me is that I don’t think consciousness exists.

At best, it’s self-awareness. As in, we have the mental ability to recognize groups of atoms as objects. And we’re able to look in a mirror and realize that a given object is moving like we’re moving, so this object must be ourselves.

And with this horribly dry view on life, the next step upwards in your question is trivial: It’s nature.
Much like a cell plays its part in our body without understanding the whole, we play our part in nature without understanding the whole.

However, having said that, it’s not logical that there has to always be a greater, grander thing that everything else is a part of. That’s a significant logical leap from just having a grand thing that happens to have lots of parts.

  • Honestly, I have no idea. It sounds like AVIF also has wide industry support and is generally quite proficient.

But JPEG XL likely wouldn’t have been created, if AVIF was perfect. Wikipedia says:

The [JPEG XL] standard is expected to outperform the still image compression performance shown by HEIC, AVIF, WebP, and JPEG 2000. It also provides efficient lossless recompression options for images in the traditional/legacy JPEG format.

I’m guessing, AVIF was created, because it basically already existed. It’s using the AV1 video codec to encode a single-frame video and that just happened to be better than the competition.
JPEG XL being more focused on those still images could obviously still outperform it. I guess, we’ll have to see.

For right now, though, yeah, JPEG XL might still be too young and AVIF therefore the better choice.

  • JPEG XL is just a new standard from the Joint Photographic Experts Group. It doesn’t have much to do with the original JPEG standard from 1992. For example, JPEG XL also supports lossless compression, which PNG was traditionally used for.

And yes, WebP was developed to supersede JPEG, however it was developed at Google without much input from the industry. As such, it never gained particularly widespread support.
JPEG XL is a newer standard compared to WebP, developed in a joint venture by more of the industry (including Google), and from what I’ve heard, it makes several significant improvements compared to WebP.

It is a very new standard, so it probably is still behind WebP in terms of adoption, but I’d expect that to flip pretty soon.

Personal opinion: I just think WebP is poop.
You can have images with huge resolutions that still look incredibly blurry.
