It’s still important to know that it happened and how it was done. Otherwise it’s just going to keep happening using the same methods.

Learning how to lead a protest and how to escalate until it is acknowledged is probably more valuable than whatever they’d be learning in that technology class. If there’s one thing that kids today don’t need it’s formal instruction on technology; I bet most of those students know more than the teachers.
I find their continued requests for donations while they do absolutely nothing to be particularly infuriating.
Honestly, Biden should just go completely off the rails, and do all the shit Trump is threatening to do, including jailing political rivals. Including the red members of the SCOTUS. Give them plenty of warning, and plenty of time to reverse their prior ruling, but start following through if they decline to. Make them respond.
Depends largely on how good you are at it, whether you’re willing to draw NSFW stuff, and if so, how extreme you’re willing to get with that NSFW stuff. Sad but true.
The fact that this is optional at all is just fucking wild. So much of our government has apparently been operating on a simple gentleman’s agreement and it’s only stood up because nobody challenged it until now. We’re so absolutely fucked.
The tone of the post I was replying to was ‘Look at these silly Americans, doing silly American things’; I was just pointing out that it’s not exclusively an American thing. Not saying it’s good.
Zelenskyy was the first one that came to my mind and I was actually just looking for how to properly spell his name (is it 1 y or 2? Various sources use one or the other and there’s no consistency), and found that page linked from his Wikipedia page (which lists it as 2 ys, for the record), so I linked to it instead of just naming Zelenskyy as my example.
There’s plenty of censorship on Lemmy, but unlike Reddit, the censorship is orchestrated by the individual server, not by a corporation in control of the whole ecosystem. Go post something pro-capitalist on lemmy.ml, or something claiming climate change is a hoax on slrpnk.net, or something anti-trans on lemmy.blahaj.zone and see how fast it gets taken down - you could consider that censorship, but the reason Lemmy is better than Reddit in this regard is that you can go post that same thing on another instance, in a community that supports those views, and it’ll stay up. It’s all up to the administration of the individual instance.
Even if you can’t find an instance / community that will espouse your unique views, you can create your own, and post whatever you like, and everyone who federates with you will be able to see it. That’s how Lemmy is resistant to censorship.
I’m not touching the lemmy.ml question with a ten foot pole, someone else can field that one.
The ILA’s president, Harold Daggett, brings in nearly $1 million a year ($902,000) in salary
Wow… I didn’t know that, but that’s kind of disgusting, too.
I think one of the best solutions for this is to offer some sort of retraining for the workers who will be displaced by automation.
The problem with retraining being the only consideration given is that unless they’re maintaining the same level of pay in whatever position they’re being retrained for, it’s not equitable. A possible improvement would be for workers displaced by automation to continue to receive salaries from their old positions for a period of time, with the percentage of their original pay rate decreasing over that time. This needn’t just be dockworkers; there’s plenty of difficult, demanding or menial jobs that could be automated, if we didn’t have this misguided sense that everyone has to have a job, no matter how unnecessary it is for a human to be doing it.
I do agree with you that automation should be the end-goal, though. We just need a better system to support anyone whose jobs are made redundant by it.
This is really frustrating. Not because there’s possibly another strike coming up (which I fully support their right to plan), but because automation of a dangerous, labor-intensive and manual industry, which should be something that benefits us all, has to be a point of contention like this. That we have to fight against what should be progress, because progress benefits only a select group of already-rich individuals and means loss of jobs and income for everyone else. It’s fucking disgusting.
At least while I was going to school there, my high school’s football team never won a single game.
It sounds like he’s a legitimate danger to others on the road. I wouldn’t let that go unreported. Think about it like this: If you do nothing, and then later read that he hit someone and hurt or killed them, will you feel guilty about not saying anything?
Criminal criminal defense lawyer. If you suspect you might be victimized by one, you can hire a criminal criminal defense defense lawyer to protect you.
Augusta, Maine. They have one actual city in the state. It isn’t Augusta, it’s Portland. However, Portland wasn’t central enough, so Augusta got the crown. Being centrally located is its only noteworthy feature.
If his lashing starts to threaten Republicans, they might consider ousting him before he can start doing things they consider to be real damage. We can hope.
If the DNC was thinking ahead even the slightest bit, they’d be planning to do everything they can to publicize the impact Trump’s policies are having in real-time. Getting messaging out to everyone who is negatively impacted every time Trump does something, making sure they understand exactly what is happening, and why, would be a lot more effective than their usual strategy of doing nothing until a few months before an election then trying to convince people who’ve been told for years that democrats are the devil that Trump has been hurting them.
Contact these people personally. “Hi - Trump’s policies mean you will no longer be covered by the ACA; here’s some information on other, far worse and more expensive, insurance options. This is how much this is likely to cost you. Please contact your representative if you find this to be distressing.”
Not that he should, but it’d be a power move if Biden immediately pardoned everyone involved in the attempted assassinations against Trump. Send a message.
Edit: I want to be super clear that I’m not advocating for this. Once that door is opened, there’s no closing it again, and it’d be basically the worst possible outcome of all of this. It was in jest. Do not actually support this.
It’s about who has a chance of winning. If you’re trying to argue that any candidate other than Harris had a chance of beating Trump in this recent election, you’re kidding yourself.
I’ve said this before and I’ll continue saying it: Trying to inject a 3rd party candidate into the presidential race is foolish. A much better tactic would be trying to push for 3rd party candidates in smaller races for local / state government, or congress. Doing that is a lot easier, and can make small incremental changes that add up over time. There simply isn’t a realistic way for a third party candidate to compete in the presidential race until the voting system is changed.
That’s fair; my kid is probably an outlier in this regard as we’re a very tech friendly household in general, and my experience with him is the only real evidence I have to base that stance on.
