I’m just this guy, you know? Except on Lemmy.

I’m someone who thinks even the gold standard was bullshit because it relied on a nation to support it.
My point wasn’ the “money” but the “everybody.” There’s tons of different economic models that don’t rely on nations to exist. Maybe we try one of those.
My problems with the current economic system start way before the gold standard.
During the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that the U.S. economy was terrible under then-President Joe Biden and then-Vice President Kamala Harris. But according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures, unemployment stayed under 4.0 percent from February 2022 through April 2024.
Yet again the reporters show they do not understand the average person. Pop quiz hotshot: If employment is low but we still can’t make ends meet, will we support the incumbent party?
Wolfe and Pinsker cite 58-year-old Paul Bisson as an example of someone who voted for Trump in 2024 but now has reservations about his economic policies, including tariffs.
Bisson told WSJ, “I don’t like the turbulence. I don’t like the chaos in the market…. That will make the economy worse, and that’s not what we signed up for. We’ve already cut back. There’s no more cutting back to do.”
Boo fucking hoo, ya dumbshit
Nicholas Schuch, a 38-year-old Durham, North Carolina resident who voted for Harris… is thinking of moving to a country he believes has a better monetary policy.
Schuch told WSJ, “I was thinking Switzerland, potentially…. I just expect things will be chaotic, and that that is what life is now.”
The only smart person mentioned in the article and it’s because he’s aware of how well the Swiss do when there’s a surge in fascism.
Maybe making money something everybody has to believe in was a bad idea
Quick! Everybody clap your hands and say “I do believe in T Bills!”
Oh good so we’re going to re-prosecute Marbury vs. Madison. I’m sure this won’t end in civil war /s
Kinda weird for a teacher to want to be spanked but I’m not gonna yuck his yum
If you break the law and nobody enforces it, did you really break the law?
I bet there are a lot of short term loan companies who’d love to “help” federal employees in their time of need
Yeah, the best outcome would be society rebuilding around the nation-states, causing it to wither away from lack of attention and real power. Kinda like how lots of countries still have hereditary monarchies that are purely ceremonial.
I guess the question is whether the Democrats want 5% of the rural vote or 0% of it. Having lived in Trump country there are a lot more lefties than people think, and they’re even more annoyed at their redneck neighbors than city folk. So if a campaign is saying they’ll reach across the aisle it will turn them off.
I also don’t think it’s hindsight. Lots of people online thought it was a bad idea. Republicans have been vilifying anyone not them for 30+ years.
And at this point I think a civil war is the only way to resolve things. Nation states will not survive the invention of the internet.
Then the solution isn’t to frame it as rural vs urban, but left vs right.
Republicans will never turn out to vote for a democrat no matter how bad their candidate is. Reaching out to them, wherever they live, is a waste of time.
She also did nothing to energize her base and campaigned with Cheney. Why would someone who protested the Iraq War be enthusiastic about that?
Heck, the one bit of traction they got - calling Trump weird - was stopped because of their consultants.
She did basically have to start from scratch in the middle of a campaign, which was a handicap.
And I also disagree with your rural/urban divide theory. There’s plenty of hippies and anarchists in the boonies. They’re just not gonna turn out for someone reaching across the aisle to their annoying redneck neighbors.
Counterpoint: Kerry and Gore
“Listen, I talk to the taxpayers so the cabinet members don’t have to! I have people skills! I am good at dealing with people!”
If they could feel shame they wouldn’t be Republicans. It’s spitting into the wind to try to reason with them. They don’t care what I think and have told me in no uncertain terms every time I’ve contacted them. So I stopped.
All of my reps are MAGA except for one who had a stroke and visited Mar a Lago. I could call them every day for a year and they wouldn’t care, mainly because the other people calling them are diametrically opposed to me.
I’ve filtered out Elon and Trump from my news feed and it’s a lot less stressful. I’m no longer jumping at every bloviation
That certainly didn’t help things, sadly
America is fucked up deep in its core and is beyond saving
There is one group of people who both share the ire of most people and deserve it: The ultra rich.
I’ve had rednecks tell me they disagreed with Bernie on a lot but they liked how he hated billionaires. Ben Shapiro’s gaggle of yes-men gave him grief for criticizing Luigi.
If votes count for anything anymore a smart, effective political party would be able to capitalize on this universal hatred.
Sadly, we have the Democrats.
Yeah, grains have painted us into a corner
