I recall reading the Sagan’s Demon Haunted World and the section dedicated to this “phenomenon”. The self convincing and conviction to these events was pretty amazing to read about from a curiosity prospective. The letters he would receive were pretty far out there.

My matter of fact father swears late one night while grading logging roads in a remote area in the 70s, he saw a big bright light in the sky that he couldn’t explain and it moved in ways he didn’t expect.

Being out in the wilderness I’m sure it wasn’t a comfortable situation for him. I still wonder what he saw but thankfully there was no accompanying abduction story to go with it in his case. These types of stories and shows did get his a attention forever after as a result.

It’s been said the pain of the bamboozle is too much for most to acknowledge so they continue to double down on it. The great grifters and conmen know this and use it to their advantage.

Many think it’s only the stupid and uneducated that are taken in by these scams. At times it’s the tribal nature that we can get caught up in.

Often the educated are worse off as they know better and the grave injury to their egos won’t allow them to announce to others they have fallen victim as it’s pretty embarrassing. They take their lumps and move on with their lives if they do recognize they have fallen into these traps.

It’s going to be many years before we get to the other side and then I wonder if it will be like what the Spanish referred to as the Miracle that occurred when Franco died.

After decades in power, the citizens that fought for Franco and supported him ceased to exist. When asked everyone fought against Franco in the civil war and they secretly fought against him at every level of society, government, and the military. It was miracle how he came to power and won a war with no support from anyone at any level within Spain.

If we ever get past the identity association of team Orange it will be interesting who is found to still be supporting this current day madness especially among the religious groups that support a man that displays so many of the things many of the regular members would be chastised for…

One of the saddest parts for his followers is they think they are getting that strong man that’s going to clean up all that is wrong in their books and make it like some rose colored memory of how good things use to be before the world become too complicated for them to handle.

Trump isn’t coming in to do that kind of hard work, he’s doing it for the title, prestige, and the fact he “deserves” to be president, he should be president because he’s special.

Not to say it’s all about his ego which it is, but it’s also pretty handy in his mind to help deal with his mounting legal issues while slow to play out but they are piling up like Everest.

It’s unfortunate most won’t recognize the need for a leader to do the hard work of a true servant leader. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen one of those. Many will argue we’ve seen that in Carter and even perhaps despite his advancing years a little in Biden but most people have been turned against such presidents with soft skills willing to do the hardwork.

They seem to want those with a finger on the button ready to blow up anyone that dares challenge the US. That’s another area Trump supporters will be let down in when it comes to Russia…

I wonder if this means political officials can be sued and jailed for allowing homelessness.

Until they get every homeless person off the streets, they will be fined daily and if after 90 days they will be locked up?

So where is the Tea Party segment of the party sit on these issues? Are they now more center than the Trumpers?

I don’t think the narrative is he was shut up is correct. Much like how there was a procedural step missed for selecting a trial by jury or by Judge in one of his trials, the judge asked for confirmation that the defendant Trump would stick to the rules of keeping his speech to the trial matters and not to the various other things he likes to ramble on about like a lunatic in a asylum.

The judge never received a response from the defense lawyers so it just expired after a few days. I suspect his lawyers didn’t want Trump to get up there and make matters worse for himself.

What I can’t figure out is why when viewing Lemmy by All -> New, there are bots (I think) creating many posts daily with links to back to reddit. It’s in many different instances I set these being created.

He’s posted a bunch of stuff there I’ve noticed. That’s a big interesting difference from the forums of old and Reddit, there’s no ability to actually control this site wide when it’s a bunch of sites strung together.

I suspect they are only viewable to you. You might notice a small trash can icon near them. The rest of us will only see deleted by user.

Great tips. I’ve for years referred to most people at work as hey guys (males and female) and then ladies when it was a older group of them in a department. Orientation was never really apart of the discussion for any of us. If taking about people at home it was my husband, wife, gf, bf, partner. Didn’t really get much deeper than that.

In school there was a group of mostly white friends that had a Asian kid in their friends group. His nickname was Nip. I honestly didn’t know his real name as another was never used. It was a few years before I realized the connotation that was there once I started studying history. Not sure if it was a parent or where it came from but most of us at the time had no idea how bad it was. It was just his name and he used it too.

Then I think of my church going father. One of the kindest men I knew. Never had a bad thing to say about anyone unless it was personal thing based on a issue first hand.

Race wasn’t on his mind at all. Being from the westcoast in a remote wilderness area most of the demographic was white and native with very few in those days what were called east Indians and Asians mixed in. More the exception if at all.

He worked for a logging outfit and towards the end of his career he was a logging road grader operator. I recall going down a road that he maintained in a Jeep with him. As I was navigating this rough road the logging trucks pounded constantly he told me to watch out for this large rock that was below the surface. Just the head of the rock was sticking up. He called them " the N word- heads" I was shocked. I knew he wasn’t racist and was friends with the only black church member in town but the word just came out of this mouth as easily as any other word.

I asked him why he called it that, he said that’s just what they were called. He didn’t continue after that day with me as I don’t think he thought about it until our conversation.

In some ways I did equate this to the numerous white kids I knew singing the NWA lyrics in school despite not even seeing a black kid before but this was in the 90s. I can still hear those lyrics as I type this.

Now this isn’t to say kids were not nasty, as they were. There were several unkind things used when talking about the native kids that made up to half the school population and more of that where my family lived.

Back to my grandfather’s time bonds were formed with the local native bands and friends were made but I’m sure the languaged used at times like “Indian giver” wasn’t connected to the real reality.

I do fear as I get older I’m falling into one of these traps with gender and identity words. I think as we get older and comfortable with our understanding of the world we have figured out, some aren’t really willing to figure out more.

Despite interacting and having friends from the older local gay community I’ve not been exposed to anyone that introduces themselves with their name and then their pronouns.

I’m not sure if we can just call everyone “them” or “they” without offending people? Feels like a good starting place but I’ve not learned yet it this is as bad as the N-word?

When I was younger I just put a chunk of foam at the end of my regular mattress to make up the gap.

In the last couple of years a it’s custom made foam sheets with latex. Not cheap but possible from local foam shops or upholstery shops.

You can also find smaller traditional mattress manufacturers too but it’s not cheap but it’s still an option.

A Maple Bed frame that was custom made for me by a relative woodworker. It’s longer for my height.

It seems to also be a switching task issue in our minds. These changes of states takes more effort than playing the next video does or just keeping on what we are doing. It’s so much easier for us to keep playing the digital dopamine slot machine that, TikTok, instagram reels, Facebook and YouTube short videos provide.

From a business sense they want to keep your attention, from a biology sense we are safe and don’t see a need to move with the random rewards another quick video offers.

It’s amazing how well they have refined getting and keeping our attention. We also get rewarded with dopamine from the anticipation of the next story or short video. It gets we don’t even really need the next video, just the anticipation is enough to reward us with more dopamine.

I’ve read doing a simple reverse mental countdown of 5-4-3-2-1 blast off helps us switch gears from another part of the brain. It can also help us get out of bed or off the couch.

Mostly the same here with NPR and the Economist thrown in.
