The housing crisis won’t end until (among other things) corporations cannot freely own limitless numbers of single family homes. We will see perpetual renting because it’s effectively passive income for the corporations, and they have deeper pockets than 99.9% of individuals.

As companies own more and more, but don’t sell, supply dwindles, and the bubble never bursts.

Unless the Electoral College magically goes away, this will be a rough election for a majority of Americans. Lots of long-standing issues are coming to a head with the realization that we’ve already been fascist for a while.

That’s faulty logic. We know that mergers tend to lead to higher prices. We also know that there’s already an issue with artificial inflation (=companies colluding to raise prices), as well as actual inflation.

Ultimately it’s just simple addition if/when the merger goes through. It will exacerbate the existing issue.

Oh, I totally agree everyone needs to vote for Biden based on how the system currently works. But what I disagree with is the insinuation that anyone disagreeing with Biden needs a MAGA hat. That’s tonedeaf and bad for the party.

Right, but winning an election where your own party already required you to shut up about anything where you disagree – doesn’t seem like a win?

I think there’s this idea that if we keep the Dems in power, then we’ll hit a point where we can return to discussion and fix issues within the party. But that’s a false idea. There will always be an opponent, and the idea that we should all fall in line just to avoid fascism is, well, misguided at best – because it’s also fascism. We’re already setting a precedent within the party to avoid dissidence. That’s wild.

Yeah, that’s one of my fears with this rhetoric. We keep reducing issues to bifurcations which is incredibly dangerous.

Win what? Ultimately no one wins if we can’t discuss areas for improvement even within one’s own party.

As a lifelong democrat, I find this to be very dangerous rhetoric. It sounds tonedeaf. Regardless of the candidate, being critical of politicians is a cornerstone of democracy.

I understand it’s important to be a united front, but the need to seemingly bring dissenting voices into line is not a good way to do it. We cannot force people to say we have a perfect candidate for the sake of avoiding discussion.

Average rent in the US was $1372 a month 2023, which means just buying power isn’t enough to figure this out. Many people who already own property miss the fact that it’s largely impossible not to rent forever for anyone born after 1990, and extremely hard for anyone born after 1980 (on average – it differs for cheaper areas, which won’t be cheaper for much longer based on trends).

I’d argue we have multiple factors. Inflation is a huge one, but cost of living has in many ways outpaced inflation. Those two alone are additive, which is why even the current California minimum wage of $15.50 is not enough.

Let’s leave it as an amorphous amount for now, and I’ll ask a different question: what about a potential $50 minimum wage upsets you? What makes that a bad idea, in your view (and if you don’t believe it is, apologies in advance!).

That’s exactly it. Cost of living has outpaced wages for 50+ years. $100k might sound like a “made-it” salary, but it’s actually not that compared to buying power of previous generations.
