They can collect donations just fine. It was big, huge donors saying “I won’t give the democrats one red nickel if Biden doesn’t step down” that helped get Biden to concede his candidacy.

Yeah, you may be right. We’ve had, what, almost a decade of candidate/president Trump now? Even the most successful TV shows in history are pretty much out of gas by this point, there’s just not really anything left to say that hasn’t already been said. Even Fox news shakes up its talking heads every now and then, and it has the advantage of being “news” (massive sarcasm quotes there). Trump isn’t bringing anything new to the table, it’s the same old dog and pony show, and the tricks have gone stale. Makes sense.

I wonder why. Someone else pointed out plans to cut medicare and social security, but that’s not new for Trump or the GOP; they’ve been fucking those programs up for at least 20 years, and that never bothered boomers and Republican silent gen before. What changed?

I’m not totally sure you need a source. I mean, sure, by all means, but I seem to remember from 16 that the secret service was really unhappy with all the outdoor venues and kept harassing the Trump campaign to pick more indoor venues because they’re much easier to secure. That’s why you almost always see the candidates in indoor rallies, and why Trump has almost exclusively been at indoor venues since the assassination attempt.

Okay, let me get this straight, Trump wanting to do straight up Federalist society-endorsed genocide/ethnic cleansing, religious police state shit isn’t a weakness, but Kamala Harris and Walz wanting free school lunch is? Fascinating how even the most mild progressive policies are somehow worse for candidates than plotting genocide is.

I know there’s this narrative about “Trump can’t handle strong women”, like these folks forgot about 2016. Hillary is a strong woman. I don’t align with her much, I wasn’t jazzed to vote for her in 16, but I’ll not pretend that she isn’t and wasn’t a strong woman. Being a strong woman didn’t save Hillary, and it won’t automatically give Kamala the upper hand. Kamala needs to meet Trump in the shit fight and kick him in the diaper.

You know, as much as they’re playing this up, I really hope the debate goes well for Harris. If it goes kind of okay for Trump, it’s going to let a lot of steam out of the hype train. I’m mostly sure Harris is going to nuke him from orbit, but you never really know until your guy gets up on stage and finally beats medicare.

The lack of FCC enforcement has virtually made it a necessity. I get anywhere between 8-12 scam calls a day, and it’d be more if I actually answered them. I use the google call screener these days, but yeah, if I answered ever unknown call, I’d go barking mad.

I hate to break it to you, but the teleprompter bit died with Obama. Trump and Biden both use them, too, they just got better at hiding them.

I dunno, I remember that days before the debate, there was an article that was talk about how the republicans were painting themselves into a corner with all of their Biden has Dementia rhetoric because they were setting the bar so low that if “Biden finished the debate with a pulse, he would have won by their metrics”. It’s probably the old case of double talk, really. Biden was simultaneously both a roided out giga brain secret Stalin and a feeble confused old man prepared to die at literally any second.

I watched the whole thing, facepalming the whole way through because it was the most disastrously bad debate performance I’d ever seen, and I’ve been watching since Kerry/Bush. Look you don’t have to defend Joe’s honor anymore, he already backed out. And yeah, it was basically like watching the candidates argue over who had a better sports car or greener lawn; it didn’t invalidate anything as much as show just how disconnected both of them are from our concerns.

They do matter because a debate can show a lot more than just answers. For example, I think for a lot of folks, the lowest point was when they started arguing about fucking golf. It showed pretty much everyone that these guys are both just utterly divorced from the real problems facing Americans. Most everyone I know IRL was just disgusted with both candidates by that moment. That nobody cared Trump lied isn’t a surprise. It’d be like being surprised that the sun rose in the east. It’s what Trump does, he’s a bullshit artist and everyone knows it, even the people who vote for him. That debate didn’t really change anyone’s evaluation of Trump. What was a surprise was Joe coming on the stage and just being an unintelligible mess. He did kind of get it together in the back half, but by then, the damage was done. That debate did change plenty of people’s evaluation of Biden, myself included.

Yeah, seems likely that other republicans knew Biden’s condition was worse than the campaign was letting on and Trump was banking on that for the debate (and election in general).

I also recall she landed some really good body shots on Biden in the '20 primaries. They were pretty obviously scripted, but they still hit hard. It’s practically the only thing I remember about her primary run.
