Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are your top 2 favourite childhood TV shows?
7·1 month agoThe local PBS station carried a science show called Newton’s Apple. Not only was the content amazing to a nerdy kid, the theme song was way too cool for a PBS show.
That and Animaniacs.
That’s how I felt about the Reddit protests. (Also that a sub going private was counterproductive, but that’s another issue)
I actually think that’s a universal truth. One’s own accent is boring or even feels “non-existent” (it exists) but it may be very attractive to someone else with a different one.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Fishing mini-game, pet the cat/dog - what other non-negotiables go into a video game, regardless of genre?
2·3 months agoBesides the other comment about Yu-gi-oh, there’s even This from the major card game franchise.
Me.
A lot has and continues to go wrong, but mostly self-repairing. At some point some failure will be unrecoverable, but hopefully that’s a long time in the future. An even better answer might be my cats. The small number of repairs that need professional assistance are cheaper than the same issues would be for myself. However I don’t expect them to last as long, unfortunately. Even though I got them very nearly brand new a few years ago.
You forgot to mention that the book is nonfiction, this really happened.
lemmy.ca isn’t the entire Lemmy. (It’s not the plurality either)

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Vermont plastic bag use dropped 91% following ban, researchers findEnglish
14·5 months agoIf it’s like my state, plastic meat and produce bags are still available in the stores. Also extra thick “reusable” plastic bags are available for a small fee.
There are two unexplained phenomena that I currently believe in (but either could change at any time - by being explained or by being shown not to exist.)
They are dark matter and dark energy. But ghosts and stuff? Certainly not.

17·6 months agoI don’t understand why they didn’t all just abstain.
I get that it was a gotcha, like they were asked the classic “Have you stopped beating your wife?” But they not only failed to deny the form of the question, but also gave the worse of the two bad answers.
I have never seen an analog clock like that. That’s awesome!
Experiencing mental distress.
How? Did you have ancestry somewhere that let you immigrate back? Family still there? Something else?
I’d love to find a way out for my family, but don’t know of any options.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•For those who like sci-fi, how have real life LLMs changed how you view robots and AI in science fiction?
4·6 months agoIt stands for Large Language Model, and that’s what ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, etc are. They are all LLMs. They are also called ‘AI’ (Artificial Intelligence) but they are not at all intelligent, they just match patterns and produce one word at a time like a very complex autocomplete in a phone keyboard.
They very often get facts wrong, but they are designed to sound confident and knowledgeable even when completely incorrect, which is a problem because humans tend to assume honesty.
davidgro@lemmy.worldtoLemmy Support@lemmy.ml•[RESOLVED] Looking for a way to make links to posts that don't leave the instance.
8·7 months agoThose link to communities, not specific posts.
I really wish the Lemmy devs had come up with a portable post URL format. Maybe something like
https://*any-instance*/post/*number*@*source-instance*Then the clients could handle it like the ! links for communities and also just rewrite links to be for the currently logged-in instance.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What movie did you see too young that still haunts you to this day?
9·7 months agoArachnophobia
It doesn’t actually still haunt me (I’m the family spider hunter) but I did get nightmares for a while from that one.
I’ve had good luck with rubbing alcohol to remove the gooey mess. You’ll end up with bare plastic instead of the rubber grip, but that’s an improvement over sticky.
