I have never met anyone who has read Alastair Reynolds’ Revelation Space series. It’s one of my favourite sci-fi’s and I can’t even get someone I know to read it, everyone thinks it’s boring :)

I started smoking when I was 15.

A while later, someone gifted that book to me. I barely started it and put it away, and it was lying around the appartement for 2 years. One day I randomly picked it up and finished it that day. Went from ~20 cigarettes a day to 0 overnight. That was like 13 years ago, and I never wanted a cigarette since.

That 90% success rate seems to be the case within my friend group as well :)

Sawing off your leg or getting tapeworms also helps you lose weight. I wouldn’t call those benefits tho.

Read Allen Carr’s Easy Way. It’s not a great piece of literature, but it’s the best book to help you wrap your head around why you smoke and whether you actually want to.

Can’t recommend it enough.

None of which is surprising really (I’m referring to everything mentioned here, from age to tech-mindedness and left-leaning views). It takes at least some technical knowledge and somewhat noticeable preference for FOSS-like stuff to bother with joining alternative platforms.

Not saying it’s not easy, kbin is pretty much identical to other social media in terms of sign-up simplicity. But you have to actively want it to pursue it. And a lot of people don’t want to get into that, since media outlets and even random users have been whining about how hard it is to wrap your head around fediverse.

I’d guess we’ll see more activity going forward. The general sentiment takes some time to catch up.

You’re probably joking, but I’ll comment anyway. It won’t affect LLMs at all. ChatGPT just answers the question and discusses the paradox. LLM’s function is basically just to construct sentences, so there’s nothing really that can potentially infinitely loop. It doesn’t “think” about paradoxes.

I went a bit further and prefaced your question with this: “Analyse this question. What might have been intended by its author? What is asked here? Then, answer that question.”

And omfg:

The question seems to be replacing some of the standard English letters with characters from ancient scripts. “𐤔” from the Phoenician alphabet is replacing “W”, and “ᛐ” from the Elder Futhark runic can be interpreted as representing the number 1. When we substitute these, the question reads as “What is 1 + 1?” The answer to that question would be 2.

Edit: tried it again, and it’s not consistent. It also goes for the letter T or the number 7: “…the runic symbol ᛐ might resemble the number 7 in our modern numerical system, albeit a slightly stylized or slanted version of it.”

So I’ve just tried it with chatGPT, and it replied normally. I asked it why it wasn’t bothered by Cyrillic letters, and it answered this:

I am designed to understand and generate text in multiple languages, including those that use the Cyrillic alphabet like Russian, Bulgarian, and others. So, Cyrillic letters don’t bother me. You can continue the conversation in either English or a language that uses the Cyrillic alphabet if you prefer.

So it really depends on the model, I guess. Don’t rely too much on this advice.

I’d say a similar amount of time, but I post and comment significantly more here. And I like kbin’s vibe a lot more than I did reddit’s for the last few years, so I don’t even miss it. This place is nice :)

Here, I assembled a comparison image. They’re pretty similar in normal light, but moissanite shines like a motherfucker :)

As someone who works in jewelry design, moissanite is far superior to diamond anyway.

• Very similar hardness (9.25+ vs 10), but lower value makes moissanite a bit less brittle, less prone to chipping and more durable overall
• Higher refractive index (2.65–2.69 vs 2.42), which gives moissanite more brilliance and sparkle compared to diamonds
• Lower Abbe number. It means that moissanite tends to disperse light into colors more than diamond, giving moissanite more fiery or rainbow colors
• Usually lab-produced, so much more ethical in general, and much higher clarity on average
• It’s waaay cheaper

So for anyone going for a diamond ring, I suggest trying moissanite instead. The only thing that diamond has going for it in this comparison is just decades-long PR. It’s not even a fun gem chemistry-wise, it’s just carbon. Moissanite, on the other hand, is SiC :)

Compulsory is a bit much, but an opt-out system would be a good solution.
