Just today I have read about Republicans calling immigrants “animals” and “illegal human locusts,” and now Trump is calling for a “final solution” to the “Immigrant Problem.” This is straight up Nazism, right out in the open, and we’ll all suffer if they are given power.

Come on, it’s not like she murdered someone rich.

I’m not familiar with how the US electoral college works. I am talking about FPTP electoral systems like those in the UK and Canada. One MP is elected per constituency, and if a party wins a majority of the seats (that is, if they have a majority of the MPs), they can form a government. In such a system it’s common for a party to win the majority of seats without having a majority of votes, and possible for a party with the majority of votes not to win a majority of seats.

Whether it’s possible for a party to win a majority of votes but lose an election, in a first-past-the-post system, will depend on the how the electoral districts are drawn, the voter turnout in each district, and the geographical distribution of the majority. The system itself does allow this to happen.

I haven’t been through the license to see what its restrictions are, but there must be a reason they give this warning.

As I understand it, some of the right-wingers are aiming to charge women and girls like her with attempted murder, or murder if they have an abortion. So it could become a capital offense in many states. All part of the men-owning-women program of the right wing.

Continuing the old Republican tradition of prolonging wars and crises, no matter how many people suffer or die, to make their opponent look bad in an election. Nixon sabotaged Vietnam peace talks to prolong the war and defeat Johnson; Reagan is said to have sabotaged talks with Iran to prevent American hostages being released, in order to defeat Carter.

Estimates are around 1000 Israelis killed in the October attacks. Most of them were killed by Hamas; some were killed by the IDF in their response to Hamas. Those attacks were brutal and terrible. Friends of my family only just survived. Hamas is repellent.

There are are now about 40,000 Palestinians confirmed killed by the IDF since October, and perhaps another 10,000 thought to be dead but not yet counted. It is simply a fact of numbers that the IDF have killed far more people than Hamas over this timeframe, and there’s no end in sight. Entire cities have been flattened, and huge numbers of people have been made homeless and are being starved and deprived of water and medical treatment even as they are bombed and shot daily.

Tragedy and suffering are personal and cannot simply be calculated by numbers. But surely it cannot be difficult to see why people think the IDF has inflicted greater suffering than Hamas since October 2023?

It’s true that there can be long waits. But public healthcare in Canada and in the UK is getting worse for the same reason: Conservatives refusing to fund it because they want to drive everyone into private, for-profit healthcare. It’s the same reason Conservatives try to break public education and other public services: they serve only the rich who will profit from privatization while everyone else suffers.

Conservatives govern almost all Canadian provinces, which is the level at which healthcare is run. The Conservatives who are about to take over federally have explicitly stated their goal of making Canadian healthcare more like the USA’s. They undermine it for ideological reasons and for their own gain.

A properly funded public healthcare system remains the best system for ordinary people.
