  • As someone who emigrated to marry an American - this judgement is in line with my experience. The process was long, difficult, often in jeopardy (I almost couldn’t get on the plane because in the week before I left for the US they were quibbling whether my use of antidepressants for a year which ended 6 years prior counted as disqualification criteria on public health grounds).

Then, the visa is strictly, only to fly to the US and get married, it doesn’t cover staying in the US or working in the US, those are separate processes.

I emigrated in my early 30s as a white, professional male born and raised in England.

  • Agree to disagree - to me the Uk office was a Gervais vehicle with the Tim/Dawn romance Christmas special episode as a nice bonus and Gareth as an occasional funny victim of his own hubris. Keith and Finchy having a couple of good scenes. Neil, Donna, Rachel, Jennifer, Jamie, Ralph… all very forgettable.

In the US office, as mentioned, I think its a well rounded ensemble comedy where you can feel it’s a collab of a writers room and a complicit cast. Everyone has their favorite moments from pretty much any character…

In the early 2000s I probably would’ve liked the UK office more because I was an edgy teen. 25 years later and after an 8 year run, 200 episodes vs 14 - I feel like I’d much rather turn on the US one if I wanted a laugh.

    “too” implies

    a) they don’t matter yet

    and

    b) mattering is a new concept we should consider.

The statement is clear without modifier and requires no qualification, clarification or context: do black lives matter or not?

Or to take the inverse: under what circumstances do black lives not matter? If the answer is “there are none” then obviously black lives matter.

I’ve had similar thoughts, but also then I was worried about legal liability if there’s drugs, violence, arson (not saying homeless are bad - these things happen even amongst middle aged middle class people)

I prefer to become a big benefactor of a charity that does good work and attend the board meetings.
