Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it safe to leave the front door unlocked at night in the US?English
16·18 days agoIt is highly dependent on where you live. And it’s not density-specific, either. Some cities are sketchier than others. Some rural areas are sketchier than others.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why doesn't the United States have universal healthcare by now? (Serious)English
3·21 days agoToo many people with too much power are making too much money, so they all work together to keep the cash cow going. It’s become pretty clear that’s what the US has reduced itself to at this point. It’s kinda nakedly obvious this whole thing is a giant fucking Ponzi scheme at this point - I’m fairly certain I’m never getting the social security I’ve payed into for my whole career.

4·1 month agoLol yep, newfies are borderline unparseable sometimes. The character Hitch from Shoresy will give you a relatively mild taste of the accent, and sometimes it sounds like he’s speaking gibberish.

14·1 month agoIt Can’t Happen Here
It can; it is; we have been watching the progression for decades; the vast majority of people didn’t notice because of how slow and creeping and careful it was for most of the preceding several decades.

2·2 months agoThey’re scared of her and the younger, more progressive wing because they’re generally a LOT harder to win against than the typical milquetoast establishment/status-quo boomer Democratic candidates, by simple virtue of the fact that they tend to be way better at their jobs, and way more responsive to their constituents.

9·2 months agoPeople don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses.
Don’t do it. Or, if you do, firmly stipulate that you will not work under that person as a direct result of past experiences with that person. If that’s not an option, just say “thanks, but no thanks”.

California@lemmy.world•(State Senator) Scott Wiener unveils new bill to help cities break up with PG&EEnglish
16·2 months agoHoly shit, that would be an incredible change. Frankly, the entire CA grid should be owned by the state and operated as a government agency. PG&E has consistently demonstrated that they are deeply incompetent and criminally negligent in their management of the system. The fact that they’re still allowed to operate as a for-profit concern is absolutely insane.

California@lemmy.world•Governor Newsom appoints a new utilities regulator with a mandate to cut costsEnglish
4·2 months agoIt’d be a lot more fucking helpful for the state to take ownership of PG&E and run it as a public agency, as their corporate leadership has manifestly proven themselves to be criminally negligent profiteers. It would be genuinely difficult to do a worse job than they’ve been doing.
