I think they’re good books, it’s just that they’re again and again referred to as “proof that communism was horrible” by people who have not the slightest clue how communism actually was besides what the western governments tell them about it

Anything that makes you a captive market cannot be private or has to have a free public alternative.
If there is a private non-free alternative, it is inevitable that eventually a politician will be corrupted and opt for less public funding hoping to artificially make the private one much better, and then get their share of the profits.
Try reading a book for 5 hours in the city surrounded by your devices, and try doing it in nature with no devices around you. We didn’t change, but our world did and we adapt with it. Of course, things wouldn’t be so bad if there weren’t people getting unimaginably rich by trapping your attention.
The jokes used to annoy me when I was younger, but now I appreciate the ice breaker they provide and just do a fake laugh and move on

I agree that CSAM protection is lacking, but the software is not an alpha. As a platform I use it just as much as I used to use Reddit and usually it’s much faster, more enjoyable and not profit driven.
CSAM protection is essential, but it’s a very hard problem to solve and naturally it takes time. Feature wise though, it’s constantly improving and showing how powerful FOSS can be when enough people are interested in it.
I agree that CSAM needs to be fixed as soon as possible, I’m just pointing out that despite this huge problem, the software is otherwise doing very well and improving faster and faster as more people join in.
I am biased saying this, but I really don’t think Lemmy is bad behind the scenes. On the contrary, I think it’s revolutionary from a technological perspective, not only because of the Fediverse but because of the way it’s implemented and all the great new technologies used.
Keep in mind that this is a FOSS project, and there is obviously no budget to be hiring moderation teams for CSAM like software giants do.
CSAM was an obvious problem from the start, but when it comes down to it, it’s a moderator job and not a job for the actual software to do.
Thankfully there are new tools now to help moderators deal with CSAM that are possibly going to be incorporated to Lemmy afaik.

You switch to higher or lower gears according to the road and traffic, if a turn is coming up I break and then lower my gear, if it’s all straight ahead with no cars then I go faster and raise my gear. Sometimes I need more acceleration in order to go faster, so I lower my gear and then raise it again.
I’ve only ever driven a manual, but having heard how good automatics have gotten, I think driving manual is pointless nowadays unless you’re doing it for fun. It definitely feels better when you’re going on a highway, but if you’re driving in the city it’s unbearable.

This is basically what I don’t understand, how would they federate with me if they don’t know I exist? Would I have to ask a big instance to federate with me first and then the rest would find me from there perhaps?
I wish there was infrastructure for them where I live, I hate driving and I like cycling
