I use it in my 50cc motor scooter since it’s got a barely 1 gallon tank that lasts me ~2 weeks a fill, so the price difference is negligible

I figured the higher octane would make a noticeable difference since it’s such a small engine

Is knowledge better if it serves a purpose, like improving your art?

In my opinion knowledge that serves a purpose (improved art, medical science, applied engineering, take your pick) is better than “trivial” knowledge, but even trivia has purpose (it can entertain and inspire) and sometimes converts from trivia to “useful” knowledge when combined with new science and tech. A good example is pure math, here’s a stackechange thread about mathematics areas that were found to have applications well after their discovery, by mostly mathematicians doing math for the sake of math.

Should art serve a purpose? Is beautiful enough, or should it be useful?

If you mean its physical form has a function other than to be perceived by humans for entertainment and inspiration, then sure, why not? But maybe not always. :) Also of note, not all art is necessarily beautiful. I would say a fair bit of “useful” or otherwise multipurpose art is quite ugly. Shock films, muckraking journalism, and hostile architecture come to mind as examples.

I’ve always felt that life’s purpose should be pursuit of knowledge and self expression in roughly equal proportions. So 50% science, 50% art. That’s just what feels right in my brain, I guess.

I think most brains are just going to have their own idea of what life’s purpose should be and most of them will be more or less fine. A majority will have said purposes stifled by the limitations of society and biology, though

• know where the fire extinguisher is and how to use it
• ensure there are adequate and working smoke detectors. also carbon monoxide detectors if there is a risk from clothes dryers, etc.
• keep at least 2 gallons of bottled water per person stored at all times
• keep candles and matches in a location where you can find them in the dark
• keep a fully stocked first aid kit
• know where the nearest emergency room is and how to get there

I also have been wanting an astronomical almanac that would have info like sunrise/sunset times (got that idea from I Am Legend), and various other sky stuff data I don’t know how to use for timekeeping and navigation but would like to learn :] My lack of expertise (ok, maybe also motivation) has prevented me from finding one.

There used to be agricultural almanacs also, with recommended planting dates. I looked into the extant USA ones (Old Farmer’s and Farmer’s) but they seem to have devolved into something more like annual rustic-themed magazines with barely any useful info… :[

I own this one, as well as Dartnell’s The Knowledge: How to Rebuild Our World from Scratch because I am a massive tech history nerd. (I’d love the idea of being able to survive a collapse but I’m too self-aware of my insufficient physical fitness for that, lol.)

Also for those who’ve not heard of the BBC series Connections, it’s AWESOME. More useful for entertainment than as a reference, but the first episode literally explores the question “what would a single human have to do to survive if modern life suddenly became unavailable?” Here are all the episodes on Archive.org.
