  • I think a lot about how “good” and “fun” are two different things.

You can have a game that’s a fascinating exploration of a theme that really unifies mechanics and story, but is an absolute downer of misery to play.

You can also have a game that’s a glorified slot machine with bugs, no real player input, and abusive monetization, but people’s brains light up playing it.

There’s some subjectivity of course, but sometimes I see games that are good at what they’re trying to be, but I don’t have any fun with them. Some people seem to demand those overlap all the time.

  • Meanwhile, the sheep and the goats part just gets ignored

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

I’m sure they’ll do some backflips to say “the brothers only mean people I like”, but then there’s the “who is my neighbor?” part.

29 But wanting to vindicate himself, he said to Yeshua, “Then who is my neighbor?”

30 Yeshua replied, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho. He was attacked by robbers, who stripped him and beat him. Then they left, abandoning him as half dead. 31 And by chance, a kohen was going down that road; but when he saw the man, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a Samaritan who was traveling came upon him; and when he noticed the man, he felt compassion. 34 He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then setting him on his own animal, he brought him to a lodge for travelers and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[b] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him. And whatever else you spend, upon my return I will repay you myself.’ 36 Which of these three seems to you a neighbor to the one attacked by robbers?”

37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy to him.”

Then Yeshua said to him, “Go, and you do the same.”

But they’re not sincere, so the text doesn’t matter.

  • The legislation seeks to amend existing immigration law to bar entry and naturalization, as well as create new grounds for deportation for anyone linked to what it describes as “totalitarian” parties, both foreign and domestic.

Trumpism is pretty “totalitarian”. I wouldn’t be that upset if all the magas got removed from power, and the irony of their own law being used to do it would be delicious.

That humor aside, this is a terrible idea that should be grounds for Roy’s immediate removal from office.

  • Off the top of my head …

    • free public health care for all.
    • forgive all medical debt
    • free public education for all, including college.
    • forgive all student loan debt
    • universal basic income
    • more public housing. Homes are owned by the people who live in them, or the state. No profit seeking private orgs.
    • close the “buy borrow die” loopholes, where people get untaxed loans to access their wealth without paying taxes
    • more tax on the wealthy
    • look into making property tax progressive like income. That is, the first $nnn of your house is untaxed, the next chunk at some percent, the following chunk at a greater percent, and so on.
    • all Republicans removed from office. They are barred from government positions for life, as well as any private role with decision making power.
    • break up mega corps. Disney, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. Their current leadership has their wealth seized, and they are barred from leadership positions for life.
    • invest heavily in public transit and safety improvements to existing roadways. Cars are literally killing us as well as sapping our resources.
    • mandatory profit sharing for employees.
    • mandatory pay transparency
    • maximum pay gap between roles. No more janitor making $7/HR while the CEO makes $300/hr
    • accounting hijinks to pretend like your org made no profit, or “they’re not employees they’re contractors” are punishable by seizure of all wealth and a prohibition from similar roles for life
    • come up with something so venture capitalist bros aren’t deciding the future, if the above doesn’t somehow fix it.

  • They’re still there for, well, I can think of three reasons.

People vote for them. Organizing people to vote is hard for various reasons, but that mechanism is still present.

They’re not murdered. Always an option, but certainly an escalation that doesn’t scale well.

They’re not expelled. Wikipedia says "In the entire history of the United States Congress, 21 members have been expelled: 15 from the Senate and six from the House of Representatives. Of these 21 members, 17 were expelled for supporting the Confederate States in 1861 and 1862. ", so that’s not a commonly used option.

Personally I worry that if non-violent options fail, more people will see violence as an acceptable option.
