  • So at this point, these people are systematically committing suicide by political association.

It may be fucked up but my only reaction to reading this sentence was “I wish they’d do it faster”. I don’t think I have any empathy left for them.

To be clear, I don’t think that’s something to be proud of. In fact, I think it’s a terrible sign of how divided we are as a nation. Nothing good can come from feeling that way about a significant portion of your fellow citizens. Still, it is an accurate description of my feelings.

  • That’s the thing I’ve never understood about the “tyranny of the majority” folks, they’re just arguing that we should do what fewer people think is the right thing to do and that seems objectively worse. If a majority of people disagree with you then you either work to change their minds or be introspective and see if you need to change yours. Sometimes you’ll have to suck it up and deal with the fact that neither of those options will work but that’s just the way it is. There is no alternative that works in the long term.

  • Yeah but that’s how some people describe Trump. I can’t fathom how one could listen to him speak without getting the impression that he’s a narcissistic moron but that’s how it goes I guess.

I think that begs the question of whether or not many felt that way about Hitler in 1930s Germany. I’m guessing he was well spoken enough that even those that disliked his message didn’t have the same opinion of him that I do of Trump. They likely saw him as a threat and someone to fear for his ability to sway others to his cause. Trump seems successful largely in spite of himself which is odd, but again I can’t see anything other than a clown with little man syndrome so maybe they are successful for largely the same reasons. They do have a lot of similarities. I just have to imagine Hitler was more cunning and less sniveling.

  • I think people have a hard time encountering criticism of Biden without reading into it some sort of comparative statement that is not usually intended. I have personally encountered this many times. I can even go out of my way to say things like “of course Trump is much worse” in various levels of detail and yet, without fail, someone will come along and say that by not offering unquestioning support to Biden I’m a secret Trump supporter trying to undermine Biden or some other wild accusation. I believe this type of interaction is most responsible for perpetuating the idea that people believe the two men are similar. By contrast I rarely see that opinion offered directly.

  • A lot of people do recognize how insane it is but that’s not enough to shut down the 30% of people who don’t. There’s a lot of reasons for that but suffice it to say that rural idiocy has an outsized electoral influence.

I’m absolutely with you though. I’m convinced that I will go to my grave bewildered by the level of delusion I’ve witnessed in this country over the last 8 years. No amount of empathy or attempts to see things from another perspective have come close to justifying the sheer volume of obvious bullshit you have to swallow to be a Trump supporter in 2024.

  • Dismissing criticism as propaganda is what propagandists do. I won’t disagree if you say Biden is better than Trump but I will absolutely not accept that he’s the best candidate we can come up with. Even your comparison to Obama illustrates how low we’ve set the bar. Obama was not a great president unless you mean only by comparison to his recent peers. He was better than the others we’ve had in the last 40 years but that statement says more about the last 40 years than it does Obama. His biggest accomplishment was ensuring our shitty healthcare system stays in place for at least another generation. He and Biden aren’t fascist pieces of shit like all Republicans these days but I think we should be aiming quite a bit higher than that, don’t you?
