  • Yes! Donald Trump is the mathematic equivalent of the absolute symbol. example: |-99| + |-594| = 693

A negative story is coverage, makes the left talk about him which riles up the right to fight back and vote because they feel oppressed. The right doesn’t live in reality, so as long as they know Trump is being talked about that makes him their guy.

I realized this very quickly in 2017 that people were falling for the trap. I have no idea why anyone upvotes anything with Trump in it.

  • Thursday’s deal came after Biden administration officials met with foreign-owned shipping companies before dawn on Zoom, according to a person briefed on the day’s events who asked not to be identified because the talks were private. The White House wanted to increase pressure to settle, emphasizing the responsibility to reopen the ports to help with recovery from Hurricane Helene, the person said.

Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su told them she could get the union to the bargaining table to extend the contract if the carriers made a higher wage offer. Chief of Staff Jeff Zients told the carriers they had to make an offer by the end of the day so a manmade strike wouldn’t worsen a natural disaster, the person said.

By midday the Maritime Alliance members agreed to a large increase, bringing about the agreement.

This is not that unexpected. There hasn’t been much excitement in the democratic party since 2016 when Sanders movement was stampled. Young voters are still progressive, but there has been no good ringbearer.

Reality check: The youngest age group still appears to favor liberal positions on some issues as much as those ages 25 to 29, Anil Cacodcar, the student chair of the Harvard Youth Poll, noted.

In a poll earlier this year, the younger group was just as likely to say basic health insurance is a human right and government should spend more to reduce poverty.

  • If Poland were to suddenly surrender to Germany, everything would be “much better,” at least according to Donald Trump.

During an afternoon press conference Wednesday, the Republican presidential nominee urged the Eastern European nation to submit to the foreign power, claiming that any deal, no matter how dismal for Poland’s freedom, would have been better than the current state of affairs.

Poland is gone. It’s not Poland anymore. You can never replace those cities and towns, and you can never replace the dead people, so many dead people,” Trump said. “Any deal, even the worst deal, would have been better than what we have right now.

It’s scary how few words I had to replace to make that work. Appeasement of a genocidal dictator does not have a good historical track record.

  • I agree that she should be more clear on demanding a ceasefire (although she did actually partly demand just that in March, at least for 6 weeks - and again during the debate), and that this war could probably be stopped if she made such demands. The current US administration is working to end the fighting, so not voting for the party that is actually working to end the war is at the detriment to the people of Gaza.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said two weeks ago that 90 percent of a ceasefire deal had been agreed upon.

Washington has been working for months with mediators Qatar and Egypt to try and bring Israel and Hamas to a final agreement.

Biden laid out a three-phase ceasefire proposal on May 31 saying that Israel had agreed to it.

    20 Sep 2024, Al Jazeera

    Now compare that to Trump:

“From the start, Harris has worked to tie Israel’s hand behind its back, demanding an immediate ceasefire, always demanding ceasefire,” Trump said, adding it “would only give Hamas time to regroup and launch a new October 7 style attack.” Trump added: “I will give Israel the support that it needs to win but I do want them to win fast.”

So he would basically allow a full scale genocide, no holds barred.

That being said though, this is likely not going to end anytime soon due to the massive pager/radio attack on Hezbollah that’s likely going to make this whole quagmire even worse. And I 100% agree with you that the US/Kamala/Biden should put Israel in it’s place before this whole powder keg turns into WWIII, which is not outside the realm of possibilities to anyone who has studied history and the role multiple global conflicts played in the past to lead to world war.

  • I guess my idea was a somewhat unregulated version of /politics , with far less “approved sources”, and more discussion and non media news outlet narratives. Basically I liked what that former site’s /r/politics community was before 2015 when people could post anything, editorize within reason. It could be a self post, a link, discussion, etc.

I don’t really want to ‘limit’ what people submit, but that might change if people think it’s not working out well.

I mean look at Lemmy circa June of last year. All of the people who fled ‘that former site’ to come here said this place felt like an old version of the internet, like 1990s forums/usenet. I was just going for that sort of community, and hopefully people willingly follow the rules.

I like the opinion piece idea though, I’ll add that to the sidebar.

  • I’d argue we don’t necessarily need more homes. I think what most cities need is really to end zoning.

There is more than enough commercial and industrial vacant properties over the US that could very feasibly be turned into residential housing to house every person ten times over.

Zoning really is the problem because developers are essentially being forced to build unwalkable communities. You’re just not allowed in many cities to buy old warehouse space and develop it into housing or to build small businesses (groceries, shops, etc) in areas zoned residential.

Ending/reforming zoning would solve so many issues… (I say /reforming because there are limits, most people don’t want to live 10ft from a factory). But I hardly hear anyone talking about it whether on Lemmy or in the media… but it seems like it would fix so many issues.

  • Average is a terrible statistical metric for wages. It means nothing other than the rich are getting richer. Median is a more accurate representation of what most people earn.

From Jan 2017-2021, median wages increased 6% ($352 a week to $373), whereas Jan 2021-today wages have decreased 2% ($373 to $365). ^ Add that to rising costs of food and housing and economically, by the numbers, Biden is not doing great on the economy.

I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing long term for the country, but it is bad politically in the short term for democracy with an election in 4 months that will determine whether we retain a democracy or shift to a fascist system of government.
