letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the lowest quality product you’ve ever purchased?English4·3 months agoJust about anything by Betterware. The one that sticks in my mind was the non-stick stick-on hook that lasted for all of a minute before falling off under its own weight. I ended up second guessing how the thing they were selling could possibly go wrong, and if I could think of something then I wouldn’t get it.
There is one Betterware item that’s lasted the years though. A hair trap for the sink. It’s a metal disk with holes punched in it. Hard for that not to work, really.
Also, increasingly, tat off Scamazon.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what forums are out there that people actually go to, besides Lemmy?English31·3 months agoIt’s a place where you can ask questions that need an answer along the lines of “all men are bastards and need to be kicked to the curb immediately, can’t ever change, and no woman has ever done anything wrong”.
Related: a small room that “doesn’t have enough room to swing a cat”.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What apps have you tried to "de-google" yourself?English2·3 months agoI have no idea who all you deranged people are who actually like the POV navigation
I use both POV and up=north depending on my use case. For some routes where I don’t care about the details of the route I find it useful to have the POV view with what I need now zoomed in and correctly oriented and what I’ll need soon still visible and smaller but still distinguishable.
The problem with up=north is that when you’ve zoomed right in to see the detail, all the wider view stuff is missing, especially when out of built-up zones. It’d be better if the detail level would be replaced/augmented with a detail density setting, so that when you’re out in the sticks with only you, a small single track road with grass down the middle and one sheep visible all the way up to the horizon in any direction that you don’t have to zoom right in to the individual blades of grass before you see the road you’re on.
Other times I do care about the route, and in those cases I’ll use up=north and manual zoom as needed. I still get caught out though when travelling south and the arrow pointing left means I need to turn right.
When I first saw POV I thought it was a stupid gimmick. But then I tried it out and really liked it, but not always.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What apps have you tried to "de-google" yourself?English51·3 months agoProton CEO endorsed Trump
Even that’s a bit of a stretch. He approved one thing Trump did. It wasn’t blanket praise for everything Trump has done. He also didn’t condemn everything Democratic, just one thing.
I don’t see why approval of one thing someone did constitutes automatic approval of everything. What if Trump has an amazing recipe for a ham and cheese toastie? Would liking that recipe make me a Putin sympathiser? Of course not.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are there people that are otherwise logical but drop their skepticism when it comes to religion? How do they consolidate those 2 sides of themselves?English5·4 months agoYes you’re right. Church activities have a lot in common with hobbies and clubs, and church folk criticise me for saying that. Any time people get together for shared activities will exhibit a lot of commonality.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are there people that are otherwise logical but drop their skepticism when it comes to religion? How do they consolidate those 2 sides of themselves?English111·4 months agoThere is plenty of science with a non-reproducible basis. Richard Dawkins has gone as far to say that evolution is fact. And yet we have never observed one species changing into another - sure, the headlines say we have, but when you drill right down into the source material the best you can find is “these creatures do not normally reproduce with each other”. Note the wording: “do not normally”. Not “cannot”, which is what the headline fundamentally requires in order to be truly accurate.
letsgo@lemm.eeto World News@beehaw.org•‘A spectacle to horrify the world’: what the papers say about Trump and Vance’s meeting with ZelenskyyEnglish3·4 months agoNone of this is existential for russia. It’s all in putin’s scrambled mind. Even if russia gets pushed completely out of Ukraine including Crimea; even if Ukraine joins NATO and there are US airbases and nukes every mile along the Ukrainian border with russia, none of it is existential. NATO exists as a response to russian aggression and imperialism, not to invade or defeat russia. It’s only russia creating the false equivalence between “you won’t let us invade other countries” and “you want to invade us”. If russia could be trusted not to invade then NATO wouldn’t be needed at all.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Ex-believers, what made you quit your religion/cult?English62·4 months agoThe question doesn’t directly apply because I’m not an ex-believer, but I am sort of ex-church (attendance).
After years of praying for healing, for myself and others, and seeing nothing happen (beyond the natural healing that would have happened anyway had I not prayed for it), I prayed for someone to be healed and he died.
So that’s how healing manifests through me. You aren’t or you die. This seems in direct contradiction to Jesus’ claim that all who follow him will do greater things than he did, which I interpret to mean at least the same as what he did, one of which was that everyone who came to him got healed.
So my church attendance is on hold for now while I work out why God doesn’t want to involve me in his work. I’m still a believer, but obviously I can’t preach “God heals” when my only direct evidence is that he doesn’t. I’ll go back when it’s clear what he wants me to do.
letsgo@lemm.eeto World News@beehaw.org•Poland jails Ukrainian for eight years for preparing sabotage on behalf of RussiaEnglish2·4 months agoNot too smart. Russia will see them as incarcerating a Russian hero for just doing his duty and use it as a pretext to invade.
A better idea would be to deport him to Russia (maybe toss him over the fence into Bellendrus). And being Ukrainian Russia will be torn between celebrating him as a hero and introducing him to an open window.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How to deal with Mom who CANNOT learn how to use a password manager, but demands I "fix it"English41·6 months agoInstead of dropping a system on her that she can’t/won’t use, try asking her what she wants to do. You can explain why passwords need to be different, but you can simplify it by sharing passwords across sites that don’t matter. So someone gets her BBC password and finds they can also use it on the Daily Fail, whoop-de-doo. Different pw for the bank.
Simplify your own life. You have to do free tech support for your Mum, and to be fair she changed your nappies for years, but everyone else is expected to trade, especially if they expect you to pay for their services when you need them.
Of course tinkering with something makes it your fault any time anything goes wrong, and the lesson we learn from that is …?

letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What makes a "good vegan", and how can I be one?English92·7 months agoHonestly I don’t care what you want to eat. It’s your body, you can shove whatever you like into it.
Where vegans become a problem is where they’re being evangelical about their beliefs and trying to force their audience to feel the same shock and horror as they feel when contemplating the meat industry. If all I hear from you is restricted to when I offer you food and ask if you have any dietary requirements, and is of the form “I’m vegan”, that’s absolutely fine. If we’re friends I’ll adjust the menu for you, although you might have to accept it’s only your plate that gets veganified.
You going “eww” and talking about “rotting corpses” or whatever is where it becomes a problem. If I’ve asked, obviously I’ve brought your response upon myself but you should still tone it down for the non-vegans. “I’ve looked into the meat industry and I didn’t like what I saw” would be a good first response; make sure not to release any gory details unless people are really pressing you for that level of detail.
That said, none of this is based on actual experience of offensively evangelical vegans. I’ve heard they exist but haven’t met one yet. I’ve known some people for quite a while before finding out they’re vegan, veggie or whatever.

I was playing some music on my cassette player at school one day, but it wasn’t rock’n’roll according to the renowned expert that was discussing the situation with me, therefore it was “gay”.

letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•To people who choose not to swear (for non-religious reasons), what is your motivation to be that way ?3·9 months agoIt’s completely valid but needs careful use because it can be destructive. Unrestrained anger is way too common and a huge problem for everyone around those afflicted with it.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•To people who choose not to swear (for non-religious reasons), what is your motivation to be that way ?6·9 months agoNot everyone is immune to swearing; I don’t see any point in causing unnecessary offence; and they contribute nothing to the meaning, except perhaps voicing a level of emotion which can be better expressed in other ways.
letsgo@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was the worst band or singer you’ve ever listened to?3·10 months agoA support band for Madness. To call them crap would be an insult to all the genuinely crap bands out there. They went through crap and came out the other side. Then they went through whatever level of shitness that was and came out the other side. I don’t think anyone applauded them, except when they stopped making whatever ungodly racket they were making and went offstage. I’ve never been more relieved to hear a bunch of unmusical talent-free potty-mouthed morons finally STFU.
Decimals are usually spelt out a digit at a time. 3.14159 would be three point one four one five nine, not three point fourteen thousand one hundred and fifty nine. 37.32 would be thirty-seven point three two. If it’s not a decimal but something like a version string then you could say v3.14 is version three point fourteen, and three point one four might be confused with 3.1.4 even though you didn’t say the second point. IP addresses are a bit mixed; I’d say ten ten, but also one nine two dot one six eight.
