I default to absurd but what I appreciated reading about stoicism was that it made me feel more grounded. Ridiculousness makes me feel expansive and unpredictable and I wasn’t finding a bottom to that.

Thanks, this is good advice.
So uh… what’s the right attitude to deal with this assuming we get a Trump? And I mean personally. I lean towards absurdism.
Don’t forget to try sorting by comments instead of posts! I often forgot that button exists.
About 20 and growing. I also do it for my mental health. Social media isn’t a place I want to take too seriously so my blocks are about avoiding people who seem agitated or seeking to create or participate in conflict with other members.
I’m thinking about clearing out my blocks every year just to get a sense of the land again, maybe when I’m feeling better I’ll do that.
140 in 2 months sounds like a lot to me. Are you not blocking communities? That might be more efficient?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does anybody here still wish the Fediverse just had more people?
2·1 year agoThe forum I used to spend a lot of time on in my youth was incredibly active - comments all night every couple minutes. The regional areas where practically dead. What we need are thriving core communities not critical mass. I like not being bombarded by thoughtless and judgmental comments
I’d guess that 50-100 active users could make any community feel vibrant. I’ve noticed when I post in a smaller community it can get solid responses (fast replies from a dozen or so users), but they die out after a day or two and people need to be posting all the time to keep it up.

8·1 year agoAt this point I’ve blocked so many .world communities that I don’t see that as much. There are some users who I notice bring the reddit antagonism and I tend to block them too. If I come across a post that is full of reddit quips I just block the whole community. I guess I’ve blocked fewer .ml communities overall.

1·1 year agoYa it’s not bad. In the popular areas it seems like I can get away with just commenting on things but smaller communities I need to make a post to make it feel not-dead in there.
Zombeavers
I haven’t but this is the second time it’s popped up today so I’ll put it on now.
Return of the Living Dead (1985)
I watched this recently. Actual not-dumb characters is sooo nice. I’d written this off as just yet another Romero style zombie movie but it has it’s own thing going on. I think given how much I liked Tusk (saw it last night) and Dale and Tucker vs. Evil I have a soft spot for R rated horror comedy.
Pontypool pairs well with 30 days of night (and Tusk pairs well with The Substance).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's an obsolete or incredibly obscure word you think people should know?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People often point to the terrible things in the world as evidence we're living in "the worst timeline". What examples are there of things that suggest our timeline is actually better than it seems?
1·1 year agoGhengis Khan is estimated to have been responsible for killing 10% of the world population, which would be more than the entire population of Europe today.
The population of europe today is more than 750 million so that can’t be right.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you all have any tips on activities to do yourself, instead of consuming content all the time?
6·2 years agoI like building things and being alone and woodworking is my go to activity. It involves working with and learning about wood and tools to work with wood, project management for more complex projects, tons of spatial thinking, drawing, research, prototyping. I spend a large amount of time drawing.

Not even loaded that’s just what middle class is supposed to look like.
I’d been looking for a good reason to leave reddit for a while.
Lately I’ve been growing tired of the push towards reddit mobile app. I only use the desktop app, even on mobile, and slowly but surely reddit has been hiding things behind their app or requiring you to sign in. I don’t want to sign in, I don’t want a mobile app.
Despite how big it is, it’s very easy to not actually engage with anyone. I miss forums, so I didn’t like that.
Opening up popular posts and scrolling down pages of witty one liners.
General rudeness, brigading, and the all or nothing mentality concerning many topics.
Reading pretty much any comment in /r/worldnews is discouraging.
I know people like googling with ‘reddit’ at the end, but marketers also know this and I’ve become suspect of ‘reddit recommended’ products. In general, reddit is turning into a product and not a place of knowledge and discussion.
I know this is probably my own reddit settings, but I don’t like how comments have been collapsing. So I open a post with 9000 comments, I see like 3 top comments and have to click to open the children, which can take a second to load. If I reload the page then I lose my place. Clunky. (I’ve never used any app to access reddit).

Luckily I’d booked a massage for today with a wonderful person.
