Yeah, I get that. I treated my reddit account like that. My reddit account was 15 years old and you can do some sleuthing and doxxing and track down my real name if you’re persistent enough. Nowadays I value privacy a bit more, so I just save important stuff to my second brain (these days it’s in Obsidian.md, but I’m not married to a specific app).

I only back up things that would make me sad if I lost it or cause me a lot of time-sensitive work. Personal data files and configuration files. Media? I wouldn’t sweat it if my media drive got corrupted by malware or a hack or a lightning strike. I’d just live with a smaller library until I get things re-download again. And I’d be ok if I can’t find a handful of the rarer things. Pictures of my family? Backed up locally and on a remote server with immutable backups. Configuration files? Synced with a remote git repository.

As for Mastodon, I’ve been wanting to find the time to spin up my own server for that one. I’ll definitely be getting deeper into the fediverse, but I also need outside sources of news, preferably not curated by antagonistic algorithms like Facebook.

I have traded reddit for lemmy and just closed my Meta and Xitter accounts and I’m already feeling a disconnect from society. I’ve been subscribing to new youtube channels and setting up RSS feeds to make up for the lack of connection to current events.

Fighting like hell right now to get viable candidates for local offices in my area, because the deadline to announce your candidacy is less than 30 days away for us, and many offices go uncontested. I might not pay too much attention to news on the national level, but I’ll definitely be spending the next year working to campaign and canvass for local candidates, register people to vote, and helping people get to the polls.
