It’s suicides. Almost 60% of gun deaths are suicides.

Gun deaths reached their last peak in the US around 1975. At that time the rate between homicide and suicide was about 50/50. So it’s not like suicides were very low with guns, guns are probably the most quick and effective way to kill yourself and if you want to be dead, using a gun is the gold standard. Still, from 50% to 60% is a very significant change. It’s also important to note, there is more variability in gun homicide than there is in suicide (though there is still a little bit of a positive correlation), so in times of low violent crime the disparity grows.

Good god the methodology.

If you count abortions as deaths, which the state of Texas would, hence making it illegal, it’s impossible that they went up. But even without that…

If more infants are born, because less abortions are happening of course, some of those are going to die.

Neither of these are particularly noteworthy.

Did deaths as a percentage of births go up? If not, this isn’t news at all.

No matter how you slice it, there’s a gap between how the economy is doing and how Americans feel about it.

Why do they keep insisting that we are the ones that are wrong? The economy isn’t their numbers. The economy is a real thing, proper operation of which ensures well fed people.

The purpose of an economy is to fond optimal distribution of resources for people. Ultimately it’s people that need all the things, right? Either things are materials to produce things for people, or products useful to help other products reach people.

If the people think that’s not working, it isn’t working. They’re not just parroting what they see on the news, they’re living day by day, minute by minute in this environment. They see what day to day life costs for them. They’re wrong but the eggheads tracking the over fitted model are right? When a measure becomes a goal it ceases to be a good measure, that’s where the disconnect is. If you want to fix the economy then quit pretending your metrics are more important than people’s standard of living.

There are groups that are very well-funded by ideological groups that have spearheaded these attacks. That’s what it is.

The republicans and Democrats were all basically pro gun control until about the late 2000s, and particularly so in the 80s and 90s.To give you a prominent example, Texas was a “may issue” state in 1995. That means that you had to have a permit to carry, and the state didn’t have to give you one and could refuse you for no reason at all. Practically speaking, only cops and security got issued permits. Even Puerto Rico has more lax gun control than Texas did 30 years ago, and even a few years ago at their peak, they were may issue and you needed a reason to request one, marginally worse than Texas in 1995.

Now gun control is dead in America, but not because politicians saw the error in their ways. To remain relevant they have to pander, and america by and large abandoned gun control.

I can think of 3 reasons why the journalists are interested in this.

3. the business dealings thing, they’re investigating whether Joe Biden peddled his influence as senator and VP to benefit his kids financially, that he used his family as proxy for his own dishonest dealings using his position of power, or something like that.

In the sense of what it supposedly represented, and in the sense of it’s land and people, it most certainly is. What we call America today is nothing more than a machine, a meat grinder that has superseded what came before it in all but name.

10-15%? Trump won the republican primary in 2016. There are more than half of Republicans that support Trump. That race wasn’t even close. The recent one was absurd how much it favored him.

Republicans don’t care about “electability” anymore. I don’t think anyone does, for their own chosen candidate. Biden certainly doesn’t look too good, but he’s got firm support as well. The optics thing has flown the coop.

Trump will be nominated even if he is in jail. As far as whether he is elected, we will find out.

This is a much harder problem than you realize.

We have a situation where big interests that can afford to treat supporting certain politicians as a business decision control our governance. That’s bad. You want to move to a situation where the unelected contingent within government will be able to control the political direction of the society that is governed by the state, which is also very bad. A noble attempt to solve a problem, but it causes other problems that are at least equally bad. And this is why noble attempts that treat the problem as very simple often lead to worse outcomes.

So what’s another solution. No campaigning at all? Just publish your platform online, let people vote. Good idea? Well, no, because people want to be excited, they like to be emotionally manipulated. You create a boring political process and hardly anyone will vote. You wind up in a situation where the only people voting are those business interests. Also, you push campaigning underground, it already partly is, but you wind up in a situation where “regular people” canvas and protest and “grass roots” and all that, which is usually covertly funded. Still, very bad.

The real problem here is the nature of power. There is no political solution to the Pareto distribution. Real power exists, it is undemocratic, and no amount of rules can fix those problems, all you can hope for is a system that leverages the natural incentives and propensities of power distribution such that it gives you a Nash equilibrium, a social optimum, the best we can do. That will necessarily still involve power imbalances, unforseen outcomes, some amount of corruption, because the actors in all these systems are people, and the beneficiaries are always people, even when the actors are not people.

I don’t know what the solution is. i don’t think very many people do.

People who don’t regularly vote are the people that won him the election in 2016. I know these state media propaganda rags like to pretend that engagement with them is the deciding factor, but fact is, a lot of Trump supporters had their mind made up 4 years ago and don’t need to follow the noise to know what they’re going to do.

In fact it’s the oldest food, found everywhere domesticated and nobody knows where they come from or who first domesticated them.

But the increase is coming from people who would otherwise get abortions and now can’t, not from people who also think it should be illegal, those people for the most part aren’t getting abortions anyway.

Why are there some politicians and billionaires that don’t support abortion bans? If there’s always a class reason, do they do it because they’re eugenicists or something? The divide on this issue looks pretty well evenly split in the US, there has to be some class reason for that too right?
