  • It’s a great idea if you’re a billionaire and have a diverse team of qualified teachers to manage the schooling of your child(ren) at your home, you can spend more time with them and keep them guarded from kidnappings.

For everyone else it’s usually a disaster, and they find out that teaching isn’t just a matter of babysitting and reading a few textbooks with them, it’s actually hundreds of years of knowledge distilled into design, practices and pedagogy - none of which your average homeschooling parent knows much about. Then they give up homeschooling after 2-3 years and bring a kid back to grade/primary school or high school who has now been set back multiple years behind their peers.

Then… there’s also the abuse that goes on outside of the view of the government-supervised schooling system (with mandatory reporting laws, welfare checks, etc).

  • This would be absolutely cringe if a high school kid was doing it as a petty insult to their rivals… But it’s the president of the USA.

I know its a melting pot of factors that has caused it, but it still blows my mind that “normal” for the USA has fallen so fucking far, so fast since Trump came on the scene. 10 years ago a fucking tan suit was ‘weird’ for a president…

  • The Trump companies have been sued and lost dozens of times - and as figurehead and CEO of most of them I presume civil damages cases could wipe out a lot of the Trump family fortune. But, Trump has been working with the mob since the 80s and had Roy Cohn (mob laywer) as his personal laywer back then and for many years, so being career criminals (essentially a mob family), I’d not be surprised if most of the money and assets are carefully squirreled away in offshore accounts and trusts and whatnot.

Also given that the US is doing everything it can to pull apart legislative protections against the billionaires class, it would probably all be a major uphill battle without a sweeping change of government and an expansion of the supreme court.

  • It doesn’t just cover service members, they would classify as appointed officials.

“a bill to protect United States military personnel and other elected and appointed officials of the United States government”

Edit: Jeez, just read it, it’s not even long. They would absolutely fall under it.

The act gives the president power to use “all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court”.

  • So many commenters have short as fuck memories.

Biden administration never could have done it because it requires Congress to accept nominations and confirm them - the process is not controlled by the president, only initiated.

The senate was 48-50 split between Dems and Reps but with two independents generally caucusing/voting with Dems (Bernie and King) taking it to 50-50. However, two of those Democrats were Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin - who both commonly voted against the Democrats legislation and acted as key swing votes for their own benefit.

There is absolutely no way Biden could have convinced them to expand the court, Joe Manchin voted to confirm Brett Kavanagh for fucks sake - voting against his own party to side with the Republicans and allow a serial rapist into the supreme court.

  • I don’t like Newsom (and am not from the USA), but the context of this Tweet is very clearly a response to Trump and an attack on his behaviour (especially of late), re: insulting/mocking Rob Reiner’s death. His office/PR has regularly used Ronald Reagan’s quotes (as the former hero of the Republicans) to point out how completely embarrassing and perverse Trump’s presidency is to their former ‘ethics’ and values, and to ignore that context as tacit approval for Reagan is disingenuous.

This article (from a UK publisher) is really clutching at straws.

Having said all that, personally I think AOC or Bernie would be 100 times better candidates. Original Tweet below.
