One of my favorite facts is that while the first pyramids were being built, there were still Mammoth roaming some northern European regions (never checked whether this is true or not but I’ve heard it so many times that I want to believe it is true)

I am in a similar position, yes. I’ve resisted for so many years, but Instagram right now is the only place where some of the local organizations I’m interested in post. Clubs, town events, even leftist social centers who are usually sensible to online privacy and megacorp dependence sometimes only have an instagram or facebook page.
Right now I have a text note with the urls to the websites of the instagram pages that don’t have a newsletter/RSS feed. And another note with the link to their instagram pages, that I sometimes check out. Luckily you still don’t necessarily need to login to access an account’s recent posts from the browser, so as long as you periodically clear your cookies, a browser will do.
I also have been trying to convince some of these pages to create an account on Mastodon or use Gancio, if available. Even a Telegram channel would suffice. Some of them (two) did, but stopped to update it after a few months because most reach comes from facebook/instagram and they won’t bother to post stuff on another platform
Ever since I was a kid, my family had this electric bathroom warmer which has been my best friend for a lot of time. For 15 years, it has been the main reason for me to quickly wake up during school and work days. I needed the warmth and the white noise, even during summer. A few years ago I decided to “quit”, because it started too feel a little like an addiction, and not being able to spend at least 10 minutes in front of this thing would mean ruin the entire morning. Quitting wasn’t that hard, of course, but ever since I quit I have a severe problem with snoozing alarms. I need at least 30 minutes to wake up, rested or not rested it doesn’t matter, I just cannot help myself to step off off the bed as soon as the alarm rings. Tbh I do not see this as a problem, cause lukily it doesn’t fuck with my usual daily scehdule, but I will soon try to roll up my sleeves and see if I can improve my alarm2bathroom time
Thanks for sharing. What was your daily usage, while you were consuming? How long have you been off off meth?
Videogames 10 years ago. I was spending time on videogames basically every day. I didn’t see it as something harmful, but during one christmas break I dared myself not to play videogames during the 10 days school break. Lost all interest in gaming in a matter of days, never picked it up since then. I sold my PS4 six months later. A few years ago I built myself a gaming PC with the intention to use it for gaming but I’ve actually never bought or downloaded any game
I still play local multiplayer games every once in a while with I’m over at some friends’ place (eg. party games as Stickbold, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Fifa), or online tabletop games such as hangman, gartic phone, geoguesser or boardgamesarena.com

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you like most about the Christmas season?
6·11 months agooh yeah this definitely counts against the good things about christmas :D I live in a relatively rich part of Italy where shoplifting is very rare, and if you’re not wearing “suspicious” clothes (eg. clothes that might suggest that you’re poor), if the store is crowded and the staff is busy and you make the anti-theft sensors ring while crossing them, they likely won’t even question why they are ringing and just assume an anti-theft tag wasn’t properly removed during checkout. when I was a kid I’ve stolen sooo many videogames this way during christmas season, my parents where just too good looking to the staff that nobody ever suspected a thing lol

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you like most about the Christmas season?
3·11 months agoThe NYE party/vacation, and the xmas dinner with the extended family. Basically the only two things I like about december. Everything else is just a giant advertising ploy or an excuse to cover up how alienated, cynical and out of touch the western world is during the rest of the year. It’s very frustrating for me because I cannot overlook the very evident consumerist and narcisist side of Christmas
Aren’t these pretty standard features for any modern music player? I’ve been using PA for years and it’s definitely on another league, but I have explored many alternatives in the past and all of them had good queuing support

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the most alarming thing you've done while drunk or high?
2·1 year agoI had a similar experience with ketamine. I accidentally did a line that was a little too long and k-holed for the first time. During the trip I convinced myself I went insane and that I would have had to live the rest of my life inside the mind of an insane person, with no chance to ever experience the outside world again. But I was ok with that, I was like “well, it happened. Nothing I can do about it. I just got to roll with it now” lol. Then I snapped out of it. Never touched ketamine that weekend again, but the following week I wanted to repeat the experience.
Ketamine is not a psychedelic but a khole can make you experience stuff that maybe only DMT can. Illusion of timelessness, lack of physical dimensions, absence of linearity in time and space, it’s something I’ve only been able to experience during my first k-holes

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some underrated yet well paid jobs that one should consider and why ?
18·2 years agoIt’s not an easy job. You’re constantly moving weights (the truck lifts the garbage bin, but moving a 120 lt bin full of garbage from its spot to the truck and back is not easy either). When your friends are done with their workday, it’s time for you to go to bed. You have to work with bad weather, because trash bins must be emptied no matter what. I work in the IT of the company that does the garbage collection in my area. My colleagues are not very enthusiast of their job, lol. But it’s a stable job, at least. Pay is decent, but I wouldn’t call it good. In other countries though, people doing the same job are getting paid better than in Italy

At the time I knew what the fediverse was and I was using Mastodon quite consistently, and I was waiting for a federated alternative to reddit. Raddle at the time was already a thing, but federation was not on their roadmap.
As per how I found it… here’s a comment from four years ago :)
just lemmy eheh unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to witness the birth of the internet

Someone mentioned it on Reddit and on Riot -I don’t remember in what subreddit or room- while talking about federated alternatives to Reddit. Came here, saw the Github, lurked a bit. Looks an interesting project and I can’t wait for federation to come!
That is the only thing I like about chat-based communities. It is nice to have a way to catch up, if I want to, from where I left. Cannot be done with modern links aggregators
