1·3 days agoWhat if the goal isn’t to win the game of rock, paper, scissors, but to give their buddies chances to win bets? The whole US attack on Iran looks more like that than anything else.

11·3 days agoIt is, but one that a shocking fraction of significant left-of-center writers are still on.

politics @lemmy.world•How to Fix DHS: The answer to the agency’s abuses is not reform; it is wholesale disassembly and restructuring.
31·4 days agoSome parts of the DHS are useful things on their own. Having customs agents makes sense. Trying to help people after disasters too large for individual states to respond makes sense too. Those things antedate the Patriot Act, and should to be restructured, rather than eliminated.

politics @lemmy.world•It took U.S. years to lose a war in Vietnam. Trump lost one in days. It's increasingly clear that Trump's war of choice in Iran has failed spectacularly. America learned nothing from past war failures
17·14 days agoHe can read when he wants to. The problem is that Trump has only ever been seen to read one book:
Last April [Note: article published in 1990] perhaps in a surge of Czech nationalism, Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed. Kennedy now guards a copy of My New Order in a closet at his office, as if it were a grenade. Hitler’s speeches, from his earliest days up through the Phony War of 1939, reveal his extraordinary ability as a master propagandist.
“Did your cousin John give you the Hitler speeches?” I asked Trump.
Trump hesitated. “Who told you that?”
“I don’t remember,” I said.
“Actually, it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of Mein Kampf, and he’s a Jew.” (“I did give him a book about Hitler,” Marty Davis said. “But it was My New Order, Hitler’s speeches, not Mein Kampf. I thought he would find it interesting. I am his friend, but I’m not Jewish.”)
Later, Trump returned to this subject. “If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them.”

politics @lemmy.world•The US slashed research for cancer, Alzheimer’s, mental health — and nearly everything else | Revealed in one chart.
18·14 days agoThe scale of the science cuts doesn’t come near to paying for the war or the tax cuts for the rich. The US is borrowing huge amounts of money to cover both. While borrowing money can make sense, particularly when used to pay for research and infrastructure which will ultimately increase economic growth, this is at a scale which actually carries very real economic risks.
