politics @lemmy.world•Power surge: law changes could soon bring balcony solar to millions across US | Tweaks to state laws mean many Americans will be able to benefit from small, simple plug-in solar panels
5·4 days agoOne which doesn’t require professional installation has real potential to cut the cost of solar by making it about who can sell a good-enough panel the most cheaply. That hasn’t happened so far in the US, and means that rooftop solar is something like 4x the price it is in other countries.

What makes vehicles expensive is that its much more profitable to sell a huge luxury vehicle instead of a mid-sized sedan. So automakers build giant trucks with fancy interiors instead of cars the typical person can buy new.

politics @lemmy.world•Tilting the Playing Field | Trump and his allies seem to want to transform American politics into a system for producing Republican victory.
25·11 days agoBecause the Republican party operates as a patronage machine run by billionaires. The policies they want are ones which transfer money from your pocket into theirs. This is needless to say, not popular, so they stir up racism to divide people and distract from what they’re doing.

New nuclear is a fairly expensive way to generate electricity and site-constrained by cooling water needs. I don’t expect that much to be built.
Wind and solar are however quite cheap. Be just fine to have spot instances in your datacenter. And yes, home users should not be subsidizing big companies.
Her other ideas, like taking wildfire risk reduction out of the electric bill and putting it into billionaires income tax are also really good ones
