  • you’re welcome.

what i’ld suggest… a general rule that i like to always follow is to use a test system for everything new. but that does not need to be a full separate system every time.

lets say you have your mailbox and want to try getting new mails from it using fetchmail. first you can use uidl mechanisms to only fefch every mail once and besides that leave them all on the server, but i like it a bit more secure: create a second email adress/account at your mail providers service only for testing. thus you can do whatever you like to to test the mechanisms only without even touching your real inbox (maybe even fill it up with large emails and look how the system reacts, i once had an email account with a cheap provider that deadlocked the inboxes when full…). then when everything is as you want it, switch the account and password (or create another config file for fetchmail) and your’re done. every change (not only fetchmail things) could go tested this way before going live with the changes. filtering could be done with procmail for example, but when the mda that is called by procmail somehow exits with success when the email really isn’t delivered, then the email might get lost forever depending on the settings of course. so fiddling with new stuff always carries the risk of not fiddling correctly ;-)

    have fun !

  • Its possible to tell your mta (like postfix) to use another mta for all mails, or only some domains etc, so using a third party to play the internet facing service then getting the mails by fetchmail, storing them in a dovecot server is easy. on the sending part you could use your standard email client (i.e. thunderbird on pc or k9-mail on smartphone) to send it to your postfix instance that also sits on the server hosting your dovecot service. the mta there takes the mail and delivers it by rules which could just be using the mta of your freemailer using username/password of your account for all outgoing emails. i am doing this but the “external” mail system are my servers as well, i just don’t want emails to stay too long on VMs in the datacenter where i have no access to the physical disks in case something goes wrong.

a raspberry pi is sufficient for such a aetup (i am using a pi4 currently but for emails only i’ld say a 3 or older would do too), adding a disk via usb makes storage huge and cheap then, i use two usb ssd’s in a raid1 for storage… that server could be only accessible through vpn if you whish, depending on your skills and needs (i mainly use ssl client certificates that are supported by k9mail and thunderbird so it fits seamless to be connected through a haproxy that authenticates these before proxying the plain connection to the pi) clients like thunderbird can offline-store all emails (configure download-or-not per imap folder) making searches easy and quick while my k9 client can search locally or on the server if needed.

maybe adjust maximum mail size of your own mta to exactly match (or slightly less) that of the freemailer you use to prevent surprises of big but later then unsent emails.

its possible to have a nextcloud instance on that same pi that acts as an email web mailer just in case of (i really dont need it, but i’ve set this up anyway). nextcloud is also great for syncing/backup files pictures, contacts notes todo lists and calendar of your phone (where i use davx5 opentasks and foldersync for). there are other webmailers available but installing /using nextcloud is not a too bad idea either ;-)

i suggest also setting up some automatic offsite backup with snapshots of that pi then to cover emails and the setup and its configs ;-)

    antarctica:

    • no bad politics
    • no wars so far
    • people there are mainly interested in science
    • no economic abuse or exploitation
    • pinguins!
    • no air conditioning needed to survive the summer.
    • winter is offline time, visitors won’t arrive or leave then.
    • last place to stay cool during boomers heritage “heat death of our planet”

well sure, it has downsides too. Next Rollercoaster park is -tbh- unreachable, internet connection is sloo.oo…oow (or did they already finish the submarine fibre cable?) and sunbathing basically only brings you frost bites (if you’re lucky).

However i am not planning to migrate there.

  • its partly sarcasm, but i have only seen one group of such poorly administrated countries that i’ve heared their president announcing a “war between good and evil” which IS by itself a religious thing and that following “commanded” war WAS against unwanted religions (called the axis of evil) and as i now learn again(!) also very specifically against that so called constitution. Was that religious action against religions prosecuted? Where surviving victims payed compensation? i guess not. So my question stays a true question, did they recently started to follow their constitution?

That specific war was acompanied with the very same types of lies that they always use to make it look like killing and destroying would actually be for something good but always is only for political power, exploiting other nations, getting oil and other resources for free or hellish cheap or to humilitate other religions, cultures, nations. Has there been a war they fought that was “not” also for oil in the first place? i remember that one guy answered this positive with the name of a war, then after looking into details that war also was about oil. No i do not believe all the other lies around reasons for that specific war either.

I cant say that i ever saw the US stand for freedom of religion. But i saw them fight a fking religious war. And i see that Mnt Rushmore IS a fking Monument for all to remember that they always until today gave a shit on their “freedom of religion” laws - they also highly disrespect properties of others if they just want to have it or want to harm someone by taking it away. But i personally believe that the rushmore monument was only build to harm the Religion of the locals who are also the lawful owners of that mountain until today. And that at least since building of mnt rushmore there had not been a single day, not a single hour or minute when the US acted like they would really care “freedom of religion” or care to not(!) intentionally harm religions they might dislike for whatever reason, the opposite is the case, they do harm them and do so for religious reasons and it looks more than “only intentional” to me, more like real madness. (i am not talking about the people, but only about who the people allowed to call themselves the leaders of the people - btw, have you recently had a president elected by the majority of people, or was it the opposite really? well different story there but similar broken like nearly everything you hear about the US…) And mnt rushmore is only one obvious and daily public showcase example of actively disrespecting religions and lawful ownership - at least if these owners happen to be a religious group they “proactively disrespect” of course. Did you read that story where recently a gov official named a sacred event of natives to be “the” event or cause of drug trafficking from other countries or such? obviously wrong and directly against a specific religion. was that prosecuted? didn’t hear about that “follow the constitution” part of that story, guess that part just does not exist and never will…

Is that what that “glorious” constitution is about? “disallowing” laws or orders against other religions while at the same time allowing to just kill others for religious purposes and just ignoring ownership laws just bcs its a religion they want to harm or just humilitating them at will?

Now ask any in the US to tell me Mnt Rushmore would be a great monument of the Fathers/Founders of the Nation or such and so on, without sounding fanatically religous while as a nation doing literally the same with mnt rushmore for so many ages now what he’ld say some other nation on the other side of the world would not be allowed to do right now bcs that is such a bad thing and his great nation would be so much “the good one” bcs it is fighting against such evil bastards who are taking land by force which is not their rightful own? How would that anybody tell me that without sounding fanatically religious and insane at the same time? now i see this as a rethoric question and do neither expect one nor really want to read or hear such attempts…

but how should one react to such a nation if not with sarcasm when they act like such shit? do ya believe when they tell you your nation wouldn’t be such bastards while you visit such a monument of ‘disrespecting religion and commanding other property to be destroyed for humulitation’? i’ld feel ashamed that such a nonument even happened to exist in the first place.

now again, did they give mnt rushmore back to the lawful owners, thus stopping a governmental “command” against a religion? if so, i guess i’ld have heared about it in the news already, maybe with different headlines, but that would be a show, the us finally sticking to their own laws after centuries !! no, i do not see any such constitution in real effect over there, not today and not during the past centuries as far as i can tell of what i know, read or have heard. And repeating lies does not make them real, it just makes all who do so look stupid in the long run.

one cannot ‘have’ or ‘own’ code of ethics, one can live it or not. there is no ‘having’ morality without really living it. one does not “have” a constitution if that constitution is not lived all the way. maybe imagine a bank robber who’se very own code of ethics forbid robbing banks but he did so anyway and says some lies as excuse which only pass “gramatic” tests on it to show ar least any “correctness” but all other tests not? and due to his lies and his code of ethics he would not be charged to give back the money he robbed but can live free and enjoy the money gain because he pinned some code-of-ethics on his fridge… only sometimes acting like something is mostly only faking it.

remember: “not” cheating only while your wife is around, still is cheating ALL the time. Same with constitutions.

  • a genious man once said:

“they should(!) teach them the bible !! … and then also point out precisely where and how the catholic church evilish manipulated some parts to enpower them to abuse even more where the bible really told people how to see through their lies to get rid of such demonic abusers.”

or so i’ve heared once long ago.

i think this is called “to howl with the wolfes” ;o) so why revolt when acting in 100% conformity solves the root problem even better ?

  • there is in fact only regulation as long as it is legal. how do you regulate if it is illegal? it only gets hidden then. and literally everywhere it went bad when it became illegal. everything you claim to want to achieve (regulation and workplace security) is completely lost and things get worse, more victims, less control, violence cannot be prosecuted cause none would go to police when anything happens, etc etc. , that is until it becomes legal again, but until then making it illegal even short time would cause way more damage than is possible to “fix” in a decade or two. just read about what happened where govs already took that path. if you want it to get out of control and destroy health and lifes, and create ground for forced prostitution (aka slavery), then yes, making it illegal is the way you get exactly that result.

and for the relationship thing… as far as i know (which is not much) the mayority of such customers already are in a relationship (mostly the one called marriage) while singles way less do such.

  • until planes have some magic build-in that turns cleptomans into normal people and hinders underpayd in-flight staff from ensuring their already due income upgrade by other means, i’ld say every unobserved bag is prone to theft, everywhere.

if you know such a theft-preventing magic, pls tell, so we can also build it into regular streets in big touristic cities and into all buildings in the wallstreet, that would help the world a lot.

  • i did say that health care professionals follow suggestions which is 100% true for the suggestions they get from (known health damaging) pharma corporations. and these suggestions are mainly for profit. maybe let me note the opioid crisis here, that did not even touch my country directly (that is until this becomes officially maybe), but assumingly yours. if you don’t know what happened there and who followed who’s suggestions, maybe start reading. same happens in other countries too and for the same purposes.

a fact that is official here (as in there was a need for a law that currently helps) is that you get different diagnoses from different doctors and NEED to go to at least two different ones to have a chance for a correct diagnose. it took me >30 years to find a doctor that also tells me what is maybe less probable but also maybe a correct diagnose. the others just ignored all facts that were noncomplient to their diagnose and either were silent about it or incapable of also assuming other things with slightly similar symptomes.

the system is that prone to do wrong diagnoses while not paying for real treatment that some patients and doctors silently agree to do some extra things that are paid better to finance the things that are not paid in one go as a compromise to circumvent the harmful system. this is not public as in news, but when you go to a doctor that you know and need something that is not paid and offer something else at the same time that actually gets paid like a scan for something that could be important for symptoms you might have, chances are very good to get better real help than when strictly following the laws without such offers. i’ve talked about this with a doctor where i was not patient and i observed this once from little distanze.

i did not say that healthcare professionals intentionally harm for profit but follow guidelines made for profit-only that cause harm.

also maybe ‘interesting’ to read: https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/07/05/time-to-assume-that-health-research-is-fraudulent-until-proved-otherwise/

i tend to say that some shamans with true intention to help might often be better than a socalled healthcare system that truely is based on profit-only directors. while healthcare professionals depend on intentionally wrong informations (see opioid crisis) from profit-only corporations, their actions effects can highy contradict what their true intentions are. but for patiens really the outcome is what counts.

so even if someone says that treatment from healthcare professionals harms the patient this does not at all include evil intent from that professional.

  • the “news” i “know” about india is little, some historical “facts” written mostly by uncivilized brutish invaders compacted to youtube videos by part or fulltime streamers. Some other “facts” which sound often bad i sometims mostly have from official media known to promote any “nice” propaganda - that is, depicting other countries worse than the own one so that people do not hunt their own gov with garden forks just to stop the crimes. Well i really “know” nothing about India.

But beeing proud of culture usually is a good thing, but that is only if it is culture and as such does not(!) base on abuse or similar.

Maybe what you experience could be a crowd effect that protects the people from seeing what they (group, society) do wrong while at the same time it protects the worst wrongdoers from punishment or at least from getting stopped. Such as it could be a self-sustaining downwards spiral taking more and more and everything down with it slowly increaaing pace. At least what you wrote sounded a slight bit chilling like that.

It could be hormones and how culture tells you to act or not act on them, or a lack of culture about such, maybe a combination of culture to “support your group” while that support does not always protect integrity of the overall concept of what that culture was meant for. A group of people cheering to each other how good they are might not want to stop cheering for “minor reasons” because it just feels good. While doing wrong things they could “help” each other (which is supposedly a good thing but can do lot of harm too) with arguments that this wrongdoing would be ok or even "good’ in this specific moment because of <insert_bullshit_here>. alltogether spiralling downwards doing so more often every day. So all of them can go on wrongdoing while feeling well supported or even falsely feel superior in general.

however a figure (real/not real?) well known in india once said something like “it is better to calm down and just do your thing than to overreact”. (this is the shortes version i’ve ever tried to compact it to but maybe you get the idea anyway).

I know for a fact that this is not true,

i don’t know the underlying things that make it a fact, plz share.

    1. i am sure you won’t pay for it if my laptop disappears this way (if yes, lets make a contract with a lifetime “fee” of 0$ i pay you whilst you pay for everything that got stolen from me in a plane)
    2. ppl with kleptomania do travel too
    3. how could you know? you are not talking about you and your colleagues or such?
    4. such statistics were made by those who benefit from planes looking more safe.
    5. “work and travel” vs “steal and travel”, which is more likely be done by a thiev?
    6. not all theives “need” to steal, some just do so because they can, others maybe because its family tradition.
    7. sometimes it could be more important that nobody could possibly put something into(!) your bag (and remove it later) to let you get it through customs for them, those arguably “would” buy such tickets to do so, as it’s probably part of their income, but i guess thats only a problem when flying in or out of countries with big illegal drug imports.
    8. <something i forgot>

I see only one reason, why i would want to be early at the seat. its bcs if i am not, my backpack might be placed above but multiple seats away by the crew, where it is then uneasy for me to have an eye on it whilst easy for theives to take and open them, especially on long flights there would be plenty of opportunity like when everyone is sleeping.

but for this case i use locks on the backpack anyway, so that anyone who wants to open it, either opens it where nothing of value is in it thus no lock, or at least has a much harder time than when trying the very same with other bags…

also on longer flights i usually did not have that problem, but that could also have been just luck

  • i am happy to have a raspberry pi setup connected to a VLAN switch, internet is behind a modem (like bridged mode) connected with ethernet to one switchport while the raspi routes everything through one tagged physical GB switchport. the setup works fine with two raspi’s and failover without tcp disconnections during an actual failover, only few seconds delay when that happens, so basically voip calls recover after seconds, streaming is not affected, while in a game a second off might be too much already, however as such hardware failures happen rarely, i am running only one of them anyway.

for firewall i am using shorewall, while for some special routing i also use unbound dns resolver (one can easily configure static results for any record) and haproxy with sni inspection for specific https routing for the rather specialized setup i have.

my wifi is done by an openwrt but i only use it for having separate wifis bridged to their own vlans.

thus this setup allows for multi-zone networks at home like a wifi for visitors with daily changing passwords and another fror chromecast or home automation, each with their own rules, hardware redundancy, special tweaking, everything that runs on gnu/linux is possible including pihole, wireguard, ddns solutions, traffic statistics, traffic shaping/QOS, traffic dumps or even SSL interception if you really want to import your own CA into your phone and see what data your phones apps (those that don’t use certificate pinning) are transfering when calling home, and much more.

however regarding ddns it sometimes feels more safe and reliable to have a somehow reserved IP that would not change. some providers offer rather cheap tunnels for this purpose. i once had a free (ipv6) tunnel at hurricane electronic (besides another one for IPv4) but now i use VMs in data centers.

i do not see any ready product to be that flexible. however to me the best ready router system seems to be openwrt, you are not bound to a hardware vendor, get security updates longer than with any commercial product, can 1:1 copy your config to a new device even if the hardware changes and has the possibility to add packages with special features to it.

“openwrt” is IMHO the most flexible ready solution for longtime use. same as “pfsense” is also very worth looking at and has some similarities to openwrt while beeing different.

  • i’ve been to the USA once so this might not count… but i think i knew “Salem” before visiting the US (but did not visit Salem though) so it might as well count.

However very long after knowing Salem exists i saw a documentation about something in the area that possibly caused halluzinations in the peoples minds, the documentation suggested this was a likely cause for the cities history, but those effects were why i knew about Salem in the first place. i don’t remember what it was, think some plant, but don’t remember exactly.

however this is the smallest city i could name in the reagion you asked for.

well, but: I don’t see a geopolitical isolation there, they even want to build walls to start isolating themselves. and i don’t see anything unique in that situation either. newzealand, iceland, madagasca just to name a few are more isolated geopolitically and much more unique in so many ways too.

could you help me to see the geopolicically isolation and uniqueness you are talking about?
