  • This is somewhat off topic, but it is actually related to knowledge, income, and returns.

I’m telling you from experience, make enough money to live comfortably and stop when you get there. If at all possible, don’t have a long commute. Don’t have a prestige job. Don’t have a position that requires OT or sprints. I deescalated my role to something more banal and my happiness went way up.

You’re likely not in a position to do that at 20, but when you get somewhat into a career and life sucks and you hate your work and you want to die, start looking for something that pays less but also doesn’t suck the life out of you.

  • Yes. I would end homelessness by building housing for everyone that wanted it. Then I would donate almost all the rest to orgs that share my values while keeping a portion large enough to do whatever I want until I die and fuck off into obscurity. I would not buy media companies and try to get lots of attention.

I don’t understand people who need to constantly accumulate more. Once I can live comfortably doing whatever I want until death, that’s enough. Put the rest towards making the world a better place.

  • From alcohol but with medication to reduce withdrawal symptoms. Three times.

From soda. I drank a ton of water.

From cigarettes after I’d worked my way down from a pack a day to three per day. I’d gone back up to four and then five and stopped completely before it got back on top of me. Starting again (after seven years) was the worst decision of my life. I moved to vaping six years ago.
