That’s kinda fucked up. Almost sounds like laws targeting homeless people living out of their cars. And for anyone else, why shouldn’t I be able to just tour around and look at sights without necessarily stopping anywhere? That’s basically what I do every weekend for fun.

My parents’ plasma TV (probably one of the last working ones in existence) has had HD overscan cutting off the edges of the picture for as long as I can remember. Once they started using a laptop as a media PC, they had to increase the height of the start menu to see it. Just this week I found the setting to fix it burried deep in the TV menus.
They’ve been effectively watching 720p scaled up to 1080p this entire time…

That all depends on what they’re optimizing for. Underfilling is more profitable, but runs the risk of customer complaints and regulators stepping in.

You’d be surprised how much engineering goes in to designing a product to be as cheap as possible without being literal garbage. It seems like everything sold on Amazon is right on the line these days.
Going from 12V DC to 120 AC and back to the 5-20V DC that USB-C provides is very inefficient (both in energy, cost, and space). Just get a USB cigarette plug adapter that can do fast charging. Right now I see a 60W 2 port USB-C one on Amazon for $10.
The 120V inverter only really makes sense if you’ve got other stuff to charge like a laptop or portable speaker that’s not USB.
Very cool. I didn’t know OpenFOAM was that powerful / customizable. Glad to hear flow simulations are supported out of the box, because I wouldn’t be able to evaluate it’s accuracy to tweak it myself.
I’ve got a few ideas for capturing my own mesh using some VR tracking hardware and an Azure Kinect, both of which I’ve worked extensively with in the past. I’ve still got to look in to some software for converting from point cloud to mesh and cleaning up the model though. I think it should be possible, and free since I’ve already got the hardware. Professional scanners are all thousands of dollars, so I’m trying to avoid that.

I’m curious what you use it for? I was looking at it for possibly doing some automotive aero analysis on a track car. I want to design a custom flat bottom / diffuser. Currently my biggest problem is getting a quality scan to work off of. (I’m fairly technical, but completely new to CFD simulation)

I think you’ve convinced me it makes sense for the right person. Especially if it’s the only device you carry around.
I don’t game on my phone apart from some really simple ones like Minesweeper and Flow Free. Everything else I do is just reading, which I have no problem doing on my Galaxy S10’s screen. I never even considered that something like RCT or RuneScape could run on a phone now. All my serious gaming happens on a desktop or my Steam Deck.
I also play Beat Saber several times a week! It’s loads of fun. I find the multiplayer gets me competitive and I’ll end up playing for up to 2 hours (assuming I’ve kept my endurance up).
I’ve never seen that replay feature before, that’s really cool. I stopped playing modded songs a while ago because the plugin kept breaking and was incompatible with multiplayer. Has that gotten any better? (I play on SteamVR w/ Valve Index)
While the tech is cool, I don’t see folding screens as an improvement, at least for me. Sure, a larger screen would be nice, but I already carry a laptop that’s WAY more capable than any phone.
All the folding phones are more expensive, less durable, worse battery life, and the software still isn’t 100% even 4 generations in.
If I actually cared about having a bigger screen on my phone, I could just buy a normal phone + a tablet for the same price as a foldable.
Looking at the /robots.txt file on a few different instances, there’s nothing preventing Google or any other web crawlers from indexing Lemmy. I was even able to find some posts by searching site:lemmy.ml.
I think part of it is that all the separate instances make for bad SEO. And there just isn’t enough content here yet to compete with Reddit and other search rankings. Hopefully it’ll keep growing and eventually take over.
