I think this largely depends on the system they’re using for billing. In Canada, most restaurant systems bill by seat anyway, so it’s easy to print multiple receipts or a combined one. A lot of systems in the US bill by table, so the waiter is the one who has to do all the math.
I’ve done the same math recently and decided it would be cheaper just to pay myself and keep a bit of savings around for anything extra. I could not find a plan that would pay out more than $2k in a year, and that’s not even a month of rent some places.
The dental insurance plans available in the US are basically a scam for adults because they have an annual maximum of $1-2k. You have to get a lot of cleanings before you even break even with the premium, and if something major happens you’re basically not even covered.
IMO you may as well just have that $1-2k saved up yourself and pay for your own dental appointments.
A Raspberry PI should be fine for direct play, but it doesn’t really have the processing power to transcode. Check to see which mode you’re in.
If you want the ability to live transcode, you’d probably have better luck with an old laptop or PC with a dedicated GPU (Even the lowest end ones have the same video encoding hardware in each generation, I use a GTX 1050).

If I owned a trailer I’d be so worried about this. There was a local story around here of someone who had their race car on a trailer hooked up to their truck at a hotel. When they woke up the trailer and car were gone. Idk if they ever found it… the race car was not registered.
It’s easy enough to throw a block of wood or something under the tire. They probably just aren’t thinking about it.
I work on my own car and I’m always paranoid about it shifting or rolling while I’m under it, so I double up on jack stands / wheel chocks / floor jack wherever I can.
I hope this customer is being charged for these orphaned systems. They’ll care more if it’s costing them money.

That’s kinda fucked up. Almost sounds like laws targeting homeless people living out of their cars. And for anyone else, why shouldn’t I be able to just tour around and look at sights without necessarily stopping anywhere? That’s basically what I do every weekend for fun.

My parents’ plasma TV (probably one of the last working ones in existence) has had HD overscan cutting off the edges of the picture for as long as I can remember. Once they started using a laptop as a media PC, they had to increase the height of the start menu to see it. Just this week I found the setting to fix it burried deep in the TV menus.
They’ve been effectively watching 720p scaled up to 1080p this entire time…

That all depends on what they’re optimizing for. Underfilling is more profitable, but runs the risk of customer complaints and regulators stepping in.

You’d be surprised how much engineering goes in to designing a product to be as cheap as possible without being literal garbage. It seems like everything sold on Amazon is right on the line these days.
Going from 12V DC to 120 AC and back to the 5-20V DC that USB-C provides is very inefficient (both in energy, cost, and space). Just get a USB cigarette plug adapter that can do fast charging. Right now I see a 60W 2 port USB-C one on Amazon for $10.
The 120V inverter only really makes sense if you’ve got other stuff to charge like a laptop or portable speaker that’s not USB.
I already had a server running docker, so throwing a few more containers in was trivial. There’s a docker-compose.yml published in the lemmy repo.
Since my server was already running and had free space, it was literally free, but if you’re starting from scratch there’s more to consider.
I’ve been self-hosting for over a year now, and the storage does add up. The postgres DB is 11GB, and pictrs service is getting bigger at 29GB. Between all the different services, it can eat up a decent bit of CPU. My (admittedly 10 year old CPU) sits at a load average of 1.9, so you’ll probably want 3 or 4 cores minimum. And based on my stats, 4GB of ram should be just enough to keep everything loaded.
