The Top 100 list is so fundamentally flawed that it’s not really worth giving attention.

I’m glad for their sake that some Niners players are getting recognition, but I wish the whole list would go away.

I would love to see a list voted on by the 32 pro personnel departments. That would be enlightening.

The value in any subjective list is really just as a jumping off point for conversation… so what’s wrong with the NFL’s top 100 list?

The players are voting, and players aren’t scouts. They don’t watch all 32 teams play 17 games and all that. Their job is to be hyper-focused on the players that they take the field against. But they’re not voting just on the players that they’ve actually done tape study on, they’re voting on the entire league, no matter how little they’ve actually seen of everyone else.

A player ballot where players could only vote on the players that they have played against (ie. offensive players only vote on defensive players from the teams they played) would be interesting.

As it stands, a lot of the voting reflects reputation more than anything.

That’s why a pro personnel department voted list would be great. Their job is to scout the entire league.

I get what you’re saying about a personnel department list, that would be interesting to see. But, I guess I don’t see why that makes this list any less fun. It’s kinda like the superlatives in a school yearbook… it’s just for fun.

For fun is fine, but I think in practice, people give the list a lot more weight than it merits.
