J.D. Vance has joined the chorus of conservatives who have begun claiming that President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race constitutes a so-called “coup” in the Democratic Party.

In an interview filmed on Saturday with Fox News’s Jesse Watters, a clip of which aired on Fox & Friends Monday morning, Watters asked former President Donald Trump and his newly minted running mate, Vance, the new question plaguing Republicans: “Is it a coup against Joe Biden?” Both of them fumbled their answers.

“Uh, sort of,” Trump said unsure, looking over to Vance for explanation.

Everyone knows a coup is when a candidate steps down and endorses their VP. Biden is still POTUS, with the immense powers of a President, but he has of course been overthrown.

I mean, according to SCOTUS last month,* he could send the Marines into the EEOB to put down any “coup” without any legal ramifications, so I feel like he’s not really being mistreated.

*THIS MONTH. It was THIS MONTH. The writers for this season really need to slow down.

We’re 4+ years into the 2020s and it’s been absolutely insane all the way through. I dread the second half of this decade.

I remember thinking in 2015, “This has been a bit of an odd year, can’t wait for Trump nonsense to die down so we can get back to normal.”

That feels like it was simultaneously last week and also ancient history.
