    Well that was devised before parties existed. The most popular candidate was president and the person with the second most votes became vice president. It was a way to force compromise but, of course, we amended the constitution to have P and VP run together.

    So, originally, if the president died, vacated office, etc., it was the second most popular presidential candidate that became president.
