Like an estimated 350,000 Haitian immigrants, Bel had recently lost temporary protected status, which is given to people fleeing nations experiencing disaster. He had a pending asylum claim but had been summoned to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office after the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to proceed with canceling the status for Haitian recipients. Federal immigration agents placed an electronic monitoring device on his ankle, which is one way the agency tracks immigrants it is seeking to remove from the country.
“He felt like he was treated like an animal,” his father, Pierres Ronal Bel, 40, recounted in a handwritten statement.

The driver was going too fast.
I hope the driver who struck him realizes that this was not his, but the current administration’s fault
I feel so horrible for this young boy and his family.
I also feel so bad for all the people who’ve lost TPS status.
None of this should be happening.
Republicans destroy lives.
Another tragic, preventable death attributable to the fascist regime.
Poor kid.
Too bad it wasn’t Stephen Miller.
It’s horrible that he was led to suicide, but that’s a shitty, selfish way to kill yourself. Someone else is probably now traumatized for the rest of their life after hitting and killing him.
So you think he should have behaved more rationally after being abused and treated like a sub-human animal by fascist state police to such a degree that it caused suicidal, emotional distress? If you’ve ever attempted suicide or felt as awful to even consider killing yourself, you would understand how ridiculous that sounds and how awful it is to know that people think that.
What you’re doing is victim blaming and is fascist rhetoric to distract from the main problem: that he was led to suicide by fascist state police.
It is not victim blaming. The person who was forced to kill him is also a victim. They are both victims here.
Have a little empathy for the random people around you.
And you know absolutely nothing about my mental health history. You have no idea how wrong you are, and it’s not my job to share my personal info to correct you.
