Yes. Heating oil is just diesel, which is not taxed and has a dye applied to identify it easier.

The current price in my area is $6.02/gal. I have a 250 gallon tank. That’s about $1200 to refill every 3-4 weeks. Who the fuck can afford that?

Thankfully in my case, I have mini-split heat pumps, but it’s not like electricity is getting any cheaper either.

Trump is really fucking everyone in the U.S.

In Maine, the cost to fill a standard heating-oil tank as of Wednesday was $1,650, up roughly 80 percent from a year earlier, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association, which represents state governments in securing federal money for heating bills.

Just to contextualize this, the average house in Maine will use about 100 gallons (about 379L) of heating oil each month in winter. Older homes will use more. At the current average of $6/gal, you’re looking at paying $20 per day for heat, or $140 per week. And that’s assuming prices don’t continue to get worse as oil reserves are drained.

I believe it. Before I got a heat pump back in the spring of 2022, I was paying around $750-800 every two to three months of heating, and that was when oil was relatively cheap compared to now. My poorly insulated PNW home was built in the 1940s, and the oil furnace was from the 1950s (so very inefficient all around). With heating oil as expensive as it is now, I probably have just about broken even with how much the heat pump cost.
