As long as nobody votes other parties in significant numbers, I reckon it’ll be much shorter than that. Look how far the US has fallen in the past two years.

That’s not going to happen. The last time it did, there was a civil war brewing that didn’t align with the existing parties. Whether or not there is such a thing brewing today, it falls across party lines and isn’t going to spawn third party voters.

That’s why the DSA (and other progressives) winning Democratic primaries is so important. Now, we have neoliberals having to choose between voting for progressives or MAGA. Thirty years ago maybe they would have voted for Republicans in significant numbers, but MAGA has gone so far right that I think not many could stomach it.

That’s all being said, 20 or so DSA are a spoiler, not a dominant faction. Their power in shaping policy will be in opposing Democrats (voting with MAGA) to try to force them to go further left to pass votes. Politics is just madness.

Well said. The only thing I’d add is that while politics is indeed madness anymore, IMO the old structures are too corrupt, beyond saving. Even the fact that the DSA is forced to form within the Democratic Party as a spoiler because it is literally impossible to win otherwise is proof of how rigid, stacked, and unworkable the old politics has become.

We cannot go back to the old now, and to me that is a good thing. If we’re lucky this turns out like the 1974 midterms (Nixon resigned in August; the midterms were November and the Republicans got hit hard) and gives us some progressive wins.
