Barack Obama told a Detroit crowd on Saturday that Abdul El-Sayed was “fighting for change, real change, that will get money out of politics and put money in your pocket”, as he threw his weight behind the Democratic Senate candidate and the rest of the ticket on the first day of early voting in Michigan.
Obama said in front of thousands of onlookers at Cass technical high school in Detroit that El-Sayed would “finish the job we started with the Affordable Care Act and guarantee quality, affordable healthcare to every single American”.
I didn’t catch the one in Michigan, but the one in Ohio was a goddamn banger. Spent the whole time ripping Trump a new fucking asshole, and it was absolutely hilarious!

In 09 he could have appointed anyone he wanted to the DNC chair, and they would have been able to do whatever they wanted…
Instead he ignored the DNC for both terms and let Neoliberals maintain control.
The DNC went bankrupt and didn’t have the money to run the 2016 primary, and was still controlled by Clintons neoliberals.
So they agreed to let Hillary’s campaign pay for the primary she was running in, and in exchange she got final say on everything the DNC said and did, even if Bernie won that primary she could have told the DNC to pick her instead.
If Obama had taken the five minutes to pick literally any progressive he knew to head the DNC, we’d have gotten a fair 2016 primary, Bernie would have won, and likely have won 2020 as well, and we’d be two years into his VPs first term.
But Obama was pissed the DNC favored Hillary in 08, so he didn’t try to save it or change it. He let it wither and it fucked us for decades.

Between 2009 and now he had 2 terms of his own ahead, a candidate Trump emerging, a candidate Trump winning in an upset, a pandemic, a few years of his VP giving a few years of relative respite, and now Trump Season 2 with a whole new set of awful people in the cabinet. It’s been 17 years since then. Sure, that could have changed course but can you really see exactly what’s going to happen between now and 2043?
Or, if you really want to play the unintended consequences game, how about this? Bill Clinton handles the Elian González situation differently, Gore wins Florida and with that the 2000 election, and George W Bush isn’t in office on 9/11 (if it even happens, considering POTUS was warned that Al Qaeda was planning on using highjacked planes as missiles). Can you even imagine what the world would have been like if Elian’s mother made it on that boat?

There is no utopia, and using a gun certainly won’t go in that direction. A functioning democracy is the best chance we’ve got. Yeah, it’s gone off the rails now, but blowing up the train won’t help. And it’s better to have a conductor trying to steer the thing in a better direction than a worse one.
