President Joe Biden will hold a closely watched news conference on Thursday, marking another high-stakes moment for the president to show off his ability to answer questions in an unscripted setting.
The fact that the most powerful individual in the wester world is being praised for holding an “unscripted” news conference is laughable. That’s the bare minimum, not something to tout as a challenge or accomplishment.
And it’s not that Trump isn’t worse, it’s that we expect better leadership on the way to stopping fucking fascism.
He’s done 37 this term…
trump did like 10x that, Obama did almost 500.
For Joe Biden this is a big event, which is a pretty big part of the problem.
well, i’m sad to say it, but this seems to be for all the marbles. so many are calling on joe biden to quit the race, and then make way for a nominee to be determined at the convention, unless he scores a definitive shut yo mouf turn at this news conference, he may just have to do it. i love joe biden, he’s a great public servant, a great president, and a good man, but i think time may have just simply ran out on him. i’d say it was at the worst possible time, but that’s not true, the worst possible time would have been during the last election, when he needed to save democracy itself, and he did. cold comfort we’re facing the same threat personified in the same villain again now. this is all so disastrous.
“I want to apologize to the American people, it took me too long to process all the bullshit that candidate Trump was spouting from what I assume was his face. Nothing he said was coherent, and I tried to figure out what he was actually saying. Turns out, when translated, it amounts to pppptptptptptpt. Knowing that, I’m much better to respond now”
The worst possible time would be this fall. Imagine if Biden had that debate performance a couple of weeks before election? At least if he drops out now he can be replaced. Problem is, if he stays in, what are the odds he’s going to have another episode of “jet lag” or a “cold” or whatever excuse they are using now? Unless they keep Biden in a bunker till November, chances are good he’s going to have another episode and freak out swing voters right before votes get cast.
chances are good he’s going to have another episode
An episode is a random, one-time thing, though. Biden’s debate performance matches his past several years of behaviors perfectly. The fucker is 81 years old FFS, his age-related cognitive decline is well past the point of speculation. Let him rest FFS
One conference is good, but it’s the absolute minimum.
He needs to do this regularly if he wants to shake the image of the doddering gran’pa.
Also, it has to go WELL. I’m sure he knows if he has just one moment where he’s staring into space, he’s done.
This is news? Being able to do this shouldn’t be a question. It might be a challenge for him if he did it after dark.
Well republican CNN wants cast further doubt on him
Yup, because people who saw the debate also had those same doubts. Trump lied, but that was expected and pointed out in several articles after the fact. Biden could barely even debate. He was a shadow of his former self and has no business being in that office.
He sounded old and has a speech impediment. The content of his answers was sound to anyone that listened. The media and many people on social media have pivoted from attacking him on Israel to his stumbles during the debate. Biden being old is the strongest argument Republicans have against him and everyone that keeps parroting that message is only helping Trump. Most Israel coverage has slowed to a crawl, but stories about Israel and Biden have all but stopped. Quite the coincidence. It’s been extremely effective at turning people off from Biden, the vast majority of which didn’t watch a second of the debate.
So deny the elephant in the room because Trump might win? No thanks. All they need to do is nominate a candidate who might some day see the consequences of their decisions. Trump is, among many other terrible things, a rapist who tried to overthrow the government and worked to take away women’s healthcare. I firmly believe any sane centrist candidate could beat him.
I have my doubts as to whether even knocking it out of the park with this interview could salvage things at this point. Not because of some essential failing of Biden, but because the narrative has already taken root, to the point of elected congresscritters chiming in.
Regardless of whether dropping the incumbent just before or at the convention is a GOOD idea, it is rapidly shaping up to be the least bad of our options.
It is a rare challenge, Normally news conferences have the interviewer and the person being interviewed.
Rarely does it only have just one person.

The fact that this is even necessary might be a reason to change course.
Read Clooney’s opinion piece in the NYT today. Dude’s right. Joe Biden is a hero who saved our democracy in 2000. And he needs to step down to save our democracy again in 2024.
What did he do in 2000?

Or you could actually read the piece.

This is the best summary I could come up with:
The appearance will come at the conclusion of a critical NATO summit where foreign diplomats will have a front row seat to observe his ability to lead on the global stage.
Biden has held a historically low number of news conferences compared to his most recent predecessors – and has been encouraged by his top allies to lean into more “off-the-cuff,” casual moments in the aftermath of last month’s debate performance.
But in recent days, Biden’s team has leaned into their plans with stops at a church and campaign office in Philadelphia, a community event and a coffee shop in Harrisburg, a 22-minute interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos and an 18-minute call-in to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Biden’s team is already looking ahead to the next unscripted engagement, teasing an interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt set for Monday.
Biden has been largely insulated from potential signs of aging by his team, with strategies including short, tightly scripted events in which the president reads from a teleprompter; the use of shorter steps on Air Force One; and significantly pared-back engagement with reporters compared with his most recent predecessors.
But some Democrats are increasingly convinced that those efforts were less aimed at preventing spoken gaffes or freewheeling diversions and more focused on eliminating more alarming incidents showing a weakened, aging president in recent months.
Biden has remained dug in, emphatically dismissing any suggestion that he’s not the most qualified candidate to beat Trump in November and vowing to stay in the race.

Democrats to Biden RN:
Downvoted for doubting Joe Biden, not even bringing up ranked choice and for posting a CNN article.
What does ranked choice have to do with this election?
