If the aid is provided to an independent group rather than a sovereign nation, like Iran supplying the Houthis, Iran could be held responsible for the actions of the Houthis.

I couldn’t agree more. Tying emotional investment into partisan politics compels people into confirmation bias, encouraging them to defend whatever they’re told as truth. It’s sickening and terrifying.
