South Carolina Republicans took the first step Friday to cancel the state’s June primary election — to give more time to potentially pass a new gerrymandered congressional map — as absentee voting is already underway.

A South Carolina House subcommittee voted 3-2 along party lines to advance a bill that would move the state’s June 9 primary election to August 11, with the expectation that the legislature would redraw the state’s congressional map to dismantle its lone Democratic district, represented by longtime Rep. Jim Clyburn.

The vote came after the committee heard hours of public testimony urging lawmakers to reject pressure to delay the state’s primaries and draw new congressional maps. In all, 23 South Carolina residents testified against redistricting and moving the state’s primaries. No one spoke in support of either measure.

    dismantle its lone Democratic district

    That’s awful

represented by longtime Rep. Jim Clyburn.

Good riddance to that far right DINO, but still preferable to another Worst Carolina fascist representative. Probably. 😮‍💨

How did that quote go again: “If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. The will reject democracy.”

I honestly thought that their response to blue states gerrymandering their own districts in retaliation was for them to finally give up the game and try to advocate for a national ban, like we’ve been trying to do for years unsuccessfully.

I never imagined the actual response was going to be to speedrun cancelling elections that they know they are about to lose so they have more time to redraw their already gerrymandered maps to be somehow even worse than before.

This is like, actually surreal to watch happen this fast. Democrats should take some lessons here in terms of what it takes to do politically motivated gerrymandering the “right way”. If Democratic state legislatures don’t respond in kind, and in time…

California has somewhat unique freedom and weight by including a coast and an economy substantial enough to be an influential nation on its own. Take heart, but take care.

That was already overturned by the Virginia Supreme Court.

They only allow it when it benefits Republicans. They’re not even hiding it anymore.

I mean if it was overturned by the sate supreme court that’s really coming down to a state to state issue.

“They” in this case is the independently appointed supreme court judges for 50 states and their individual state constitutions.

Or is “they” Republicans? Because anyone paying attention knows they haven’t been hiding their corruption for like 50 years.

Of course this is going to be a bigger deal due to the Federal Supreme Court gutting the civil rights act. I expect we’ll see cases like this in several states

Unfortunate to hear that is how the VA Supreme Court ruled.

Absolutely hysterical that they chopped Columbia up into thirds. It’s such a democratic stronghold, they think divvying it up dillutes the vote, but I think they might be shooting themselves in the foot here. Either way, shit can’t get done until Gov. calls 'em back for a special session and Foghorn Leghorn is fairly against this measure.

Edit: Weird to see so many folks to get worked up about my state. I actually think this has a higher chance of backfiring, if they enact it, than succeeding. All that being said, THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN , MARK MY WORDS. Gov. McMaster is leaving office and truly does not give a shit. He would rather keep the 6-1, than risk a 4-3.

I wonder if these red states are going to get their white flags from Amazon when this is all over with.
