House Democrats are preparing a vast oversight agenda, with investigations of President Donald Trump, his family and his administration if the party sweeps control of the chamber from Republicans in the November elections.

The undertaking is as robust as it is daunting, spanning several House committees. With majority power comes bigger budgets and staff, and the ability to investigate, subpoena and potentially course-correct what the Democrats say are widespread corruption and abuses of power. Impeachment of the Republican president and Cabinet officials is not off the table.

“There is a cost to the American people of the out-of-control corruption,” said Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who is in line to become House speaker if Democrats win control at the Capitol.

Democrats plan to wring their hands harder than ever before and demand their conservative co-conspirators in the GOP stop being so unreasonable before approving every cabinet appointment and every law conservatives want.

Neoliberals are conservatives and need to be dealt with as such. American fascism will never stop until we finish Sherman’s work.

We need to act individually to make that happen. Do your part. Get your hands dirty and help end fascism one conservative at a time.

The impeachment idea becomes more popular as centrist establishment Dems and like-minded GOP realize maintaining the current admin is more damaging to their wealth portfolios than maintaining the status quo.

So if it does happen, it’s to serve the interests of the ruling class, rather than the populace they’re supposed to represent. Unless the admin can counter with a “deal” that’s too sweet to refuse.

2020 should have been the end but democrats wanted to run against Trump again so they could be as terrible as they wanted to be.

“Vote for me… or else” is not democracy, it is a hostage situation.

I like your energy, but I’d like to add something to that agenda… we need to finish Sherman’s work.

Impeachment does nothing. He’s already been impeached. Twice.

Unless they want to demonstrate to the People and the world that their democracy is broken for a third time, it has limited use.

Ya, you’re right. Oversight is exactly what it sounds like. It doesn’t matter what they uncover or expose if the senate is still loyal to their president.

impeachment is required for removal by congress.

theoretically, congress (specifically, the senate) could remove him after impeachement. they wont, of course, but impeachment is required by the house before the senate can remove him.

If you can’t get 2/3 of the senate to convict, impeachment is so much political theater. Democrats will be quite lucky to take a majority in the senate, 67 is theoretically possible but not realistic, I don’t think, and unless a lot changes quickly there won’t be many republican defections. Not that it’s useless, because impeachment proceedings are another time sink for the executive branch, but it’s foolish to put eggs into that basket because it’s a broken mechanism.

The more important function of Congress over the next two years will be the stoppage of rubber stamping of Trump-friendly legislation, subpoenaing executive officials and forcing them to choose between testifying under oath and risking contempt (and public reporting of same, for whatever that’s worth), and investigating and reporting on the crimes that Trump and his administration have committed over the past two years.

“Option” - lmao, already providing themselves cover to do nothing. Dems are so beyond pathetic.

Dems are turning what should have been a blue tsunami this year into a tepid blue wave with all the left-bashing they’re engaged in, and this is in the face of a pure and unadulterated fascist regime. They’re totally clueless on how to meet this moment.

By the time they’re done doing worse than jack shit over the next 2 years, Repugs will be back to winning elections.

The 2 party system and the delusion of checks and balances have failed this country beyond reason. Those who claim to represent us are torn between doing the bidding of oligarchs, or foreign countries’ governments, while our people are left suffering and robbed of our very dignity.

    Well and truly disgustipated.

    My favorite Mamdani quote:

“For far too long, our party has seen its job as managing decline instead of delivering material change for working people,” Mamdani said at a rally headlined by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. “It has seen its job as explaining why we cannot instead of showing how we can."

That’s the MAGA comedy duo of Schmuck & Jeffries, in a nutshell.

Nothing will happen to MAGA as long as those two losers remain in power. They need to get the hook, dragged from the stage, and investigated just as deeply as any MAGA, because we’ll find out they were working for them the entire time. Nothing else but collaboration explains their consistent fecklessness.

I’d like to believe they’ll follow through. 🙄 But even best case scenario, it’s gonna take more than two years to investigate, prosecute, with the sheer volume of crimes and corruption. And even then… the damage won’t be undone in my lifetime.
