Roughly what happened:
- A few days ago, Bovino promised something big
- ICE was being brutal, but not stopping the protests or the hunger strike inside the concentration camps
- Bovino sent in the Proud Boys, but the protesters ran them off
- Gov. Sherrill sent in the state police, who attacked the protesters, including those in “free speech zones”
Disappointing move by Sherrill.
I’m curious as to why state Governors seem powerless to stop these concentration camps in their state.
I guess they are federal contracts, so they don’t have the authority to end them?
But isn’t there other things that can be done? Can they not penalize anyone who chooses to work there by imposing a 100% state income tax on them or something?
There has to be something they can do. I’m convinced that they don’t want to expend the political capital required.
They support the camps. This all only looks confusing if you refuse to accept that democratic leadership wants them too. The rest is theater.
I don’t know about “wants them too”. The people in the camps are overwhelmingly democrat supporters, even if they can’t vote.
I think it is more that doing anything actionable to stop them would likely fail and that would make them look bad. So they don’t want to act because there is nothing for them to gain.Occam’s razor says it’s because of class solidarity among the elite. If they think standing up to fascists is unpopular, then it’s because they are only thinking of what’s popular with those who have power. But they trained as well to expect incompetence from the whole lot.
even if they can’t vote
If you don’t vote (whether voluntarily or because you can’t) then you don’t count to these people.
In this case they are parents of potential voters, and in some cases potential voters themselves. And they are also potential community leaders who can support the politician and get them more votes.
“There is no money in it for me if I fight for your human dignity. So you can starve to death in the rape camps.” -DNC
-politicians Fixed that for you.
Yeah. They don’t have authority to end the contract. Local officials can do things to interfere with utility hookups.
But sending in the local police to attack protesters and the press is just an asshole move
Same asshole move we saw from way too many Dem leaders in 2020 when George Floyd protests were happening, and similar to asshole moves we saw from the same people in 2024 against anti-genocide protesters. Democratic party must do better on this.
All in all, it’s the federal government’s job to police itself. So governors aren’t really supposed to be empowered to stop things like this. Anything they do try can reasonable be deflacted as outside their authority or retalitory.
That’s just the way the system is designed. It expected congress and the supreme court to keep the executive branch under control. That is where the failure is.That’s how things are supposed to work. But it’s not working.
I think it’s time for governors to start coming up with creative solutions to shit like this (as well as federal taxes from blue states used to subsidize failing red states)
I agree it is not working. But the system is set up to prevent governors from being able to do what you want them to do. And since they are politicians and not real people. They aren’t putting in a lot of effort.
That’s why I said they need to get creative.
What’s stopping a state government from levying a 100% state income tax on any citizens of said state that work at a concentration camp?
Besides the Supreme Court, I guess… Still worth a shot imo
How do you expect them to enforce it? Would they personally walk over to the facilities and singlehandedly kick out the paramilitary force that’s entrenched there with federal backing?
Did you not read the article? Who do you think the governors can send to kick these people out when they say “no” to a polite request to leave?
Bovino sent in the Proud Boys, but the protesters ran them off
Guy who is no longer employed by the government sends an extremist paramilitary group that was never employed the government, who got arrested for acts of insurrection before being pardoned by the traitorous president who incited that insurrection, to do the government’s dirty work?
Yeah, if that doesn’t scream sturmabteilung, then I didn’t know what does…
Is Sherrill pulling a Fetterman
Why does anyone still expect police to protect their rights over ICE operations? Cops support ICE’s mission, but their police union, benefits, and protections are so far above and beyond what the rejects who took ICE jobs get, no cop is going to quit the force to join ICE. They’re what gets sent in when ICE can’t handle a situation themselves because cops have been doing this shit for decades and are trained to suppress threats that can push back or organize, are better equipped, and their elite units drill and train to work as units, not a gaggle of wanna be Rambos.
People should be able to expect better from a Dem governor
Why? Look at Virginia’s governor Spanberger.
“As a former federal law enforcement officer and someone who comes from a law enforcement family, public safety is personal to me”
“Preventing gun violence is an issue of public safety — both for the officers who protect our streets and the children and families they work to keep safe. Whether you’re a first responder or a survivor seeking justice, these laws reflect a simple commitment: the Commonwealth of Virginia will always have your back.”
Her words give her motives away, she’s a fucking cop who puts cops first in her statements repeatedly. And this is one of their dreamboats who’s trying to play the “gerrymander your way to power” game as if cherry picking your voting maps is a longterm strategy. She’s finding that the courts are already loaded with conservatives who thought of that move long ago, so Dems are getting shut down when they try while it gets approved for conservatives.
Meanwhile, the cops and institutions she puts first won’t enforce her law, even though they’re packed with fellow cops and former cops.
“I want to be very clear, the Sheriff and I are in total agreement that we will not enforce the new Assault Weapons and Assault Weapons Carry bans just signed into law as we believe they are Unconstitutional on their face… I took an oath to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution at 18 years old when I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and subsequently as a police officer and your Commonwealth’s Attorney. These new gun laws not only violate the U.S. Constitution but also the Virginia Constitution and the Sheriff and I stand with other Virginia Sheriff’s and Commonwealth’s Attorneys in putting the Constitution above politics.” -Appomattox County Commonwealth Attorney Leslie M. Fleet
These are the same cops and prosecutors who we cooperating with her predecessor who was pro-ICE. The opinions and politics of the ass in the executive chair may have changed, but that doesn’t change the opinions and politics of the cops she’s protecting. They’re off doing their own selective law enforcement while she undercuts the public’s ability to protect themselves from the goon squad she once served and thinks is still friends with.
And who’s on her state’s goon squad? There’s the cop that hid cameras in the locker room of the Junior Troopers (age 14-17), the one arrested for soliciting minors while working at a special needs school, the one brandishing on kids he forced to lie in the street while off-duty because of a fender bende, and busted a pro-Palestinian student protest,
And then there’s the trio who murdered a man in their custody after they arrested him for the heinous crime of… trespassing. Judge set bail at $5k on second-degree murder charges. That’s a helluva deal nobody without the backing of a police union gets. Also, trying to find a link to that story is insanely difficult, either the media isn’t covering it or they’re scrubbing the internet.
The only difference between Dems and Republicans is whether they lick the right boot or the left boot. At least Republicans are wise enough to recognize what ideals the cops serve. Ex-cop Democrats are going to get the brown shirts turned on them one day when they’re labeled “enemies of the state” and all the pleas of “but I am one of you” aren’t going to amount to shit. But they will thank them for disarming the people who are willing to fight back!

Police protect capital, not you.
need more molotovs in the usa
Styrofoam, kerosene, and just a little sugar all stirred together.
I thought Bovino is out as BP chief and he’s now fucked back off to California. Am I missing something?
He’s informally helping to coordinate stuff like this even if not part of his official duties
Classic private sector consulting pivot.
